SIMULATION FOUNDATION 3DEXPERIENCE USER ROLE

Engineers often lack the detailed information of how their trade-off decisions affect the performance and robustness of their products. While research has shown that best-in class companies leverage simulation techniques with measureable business benefits, there are many challenges and few have been able to implement the vision of simulation driven design. One such challenge is that simulation has often been restricted to experts, too complex and time consuming for engineers and designers to leverage.

On the Measurement and Modeling of Polymeric Materials that Exhibit Unstable Localized Necking

Some polymeric materials are known to exhibit localized necking instabilities during uniaxial tension testing. Once the neck begins, it first localizes and then propagates over the length of the sample. After it has fully propagated, the material will often endure significant amounts of additional deformation before complete failure. The localized necking creates a problem in that traditional methods of measuring strain & stress from the sample become invalid. Even the newest imaging correlation methods are unable to properly measure the sample's strain and stress. This paper presents a pragmatic approach to salvage such data and discusses its use within finite element models.

Multiscale Approach to Damage Analysis of Laminated Composite Structures

The presented work depicts results of a two-scale approach to the problem of damage and failure prediction on laminated composite structures. Modeling on the micro-level has enabled insight into the underlying physical processes which lead to homogenized properties of the macro-scale material. In this work, micromechanical analysis has been performed by application of the High Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells theory (HFGMC), which is implemented into Abaqus via user material subroutine VUMAT. As result of the HFGMC analysis, micromechanical strain concentration tensors, which relate the strain tensor on the macro-level to the strain tensors of each subcell, have been computed.

ASSEMBLY MODELING SPECIALIST 3DEXPERIENCE USER ROLE

Assembly Modeling Specialist enables the user to easily manage model structure for large assemblies of parts and meshes, either created on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform or in other 3rd party tools. Automated creation of finite element model representations based on Meshing Rules, or User-Defined Procedures or imported from an external mesher is enabled in addition to management of links between assemblies, parts, meshes and documents . It is now possible to create high quality finite element models using Batch Modeling breakthrough technology, including the automated generation of idealized geometries that can be reused between several simulations.

Simulating Underbelly Blast Events using AbaqusExplicit - CEL

Accurate modeling and simulation of the effects of near-field blast events on vehicles and personnel is of interest to the Department of Defense. Applications include minimizing casualties and improving vehicle survivability from attacks using improvised explosive devices. The coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) capability in Abaqus/Explicit was used to replicate experimental tests in which the structural response of varying metal panels subjected to the detonation of a buried charge was characterized. A Lagrangian representation was used for the test structure and panel and an Eulerian representation was used for the soil, explosive, and ambient air.

Cyclic martensitic phase transformation in multivariant mono-crystals at finite strains using UMAT

Numerical validation of a mico-macro material model for solid-solid martensitic phase transformation (PT) of multi-variant mono-crystals at finite strains with comparisons to linearized strains is presented, using reliable experimental data. The material and numerical models are based on work by Govindjee and Miehe (2001) and by Stein and Zwickert (2006) at linearized strains and extended to finite strains by Stein and Sagar (submitted 2006). In the above mentioned works, C1 -continuous thermo-mechanical micro-macro PT-theory using Bain’s principle is presented by a unified Lagrangian functional including phase evolution equations with mass conservation and quasi-convexification of energy wells.

Study of the Rayleigh-Taylor and RichtmyerMeshkov instabilities in elastoplastic solids by means of the ABAQUS code

The classical Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability appears in the interface between two fluids of different densities in a gravitatory field while the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability develops when a shock passes through such an interface. In both cases, the inevitable imperfections of the interface grow without bound. Conditions for the development of the RT and RM instabilities arise in the Laboratory of Planetary Sciences (LAPLAS) experiment that will be performed at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI), Darmstadt, Germany, in the frame of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) facility. In this experiment, a multilayered cylindrical target is irradiated by means of an annular heavy ion beam in order to compress the inner sample without heating it.

SIMULATION ASSET MANAGEMENT 3DEXPERIENCE USER ROLE

Simulation Asset Management provides a non-intrusive platform to capture workflows as designers and engineers interact with their respective tools. Key decisions such as the tools required, the versions to use, the necessary inputs and run options are automatically captured. As such Simulation Asset Management allows users to interact with all of the tools required to complete their work whilst providing critical traceability and repeatability.

Analysis of Oil Well Casing Connections Subjected to Non-axisymmetric Loads

Oilfield casings employ threaded connections which are designed to provide both structural and sealing integrity under installation and service loads. This paper presents a finite element methodology for analyzing casing connections subjected to non-axisymmetric loads. The analysis approach can be used for assessing connection structural integrity, sealability and fatigue life.

CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT NON-LINEARITIES ON ENGINEERING PLASTICS

This work makes a revision of the main relative aspects of the nonlinear structural analysis in engineering plastic structures using the software ABAQUS Standard V6.5. Effects of temperature, mechanical effort, fluency and relaxation are considered. Mechanical properties of plastics were shown to be highly sensitivity with temperature. Then it ́s important that these kind of effects will be considered for most plastics structural analysis. Another important aspect is relative to time effects due to viscoelastic nature of polymers. The work validates experimental results relative to creep and relaxation through a numerical study coupling thermo-mechanical and viscous material effects.
