News: Unifeeder to optimize network capacity with Quintiq

March 31, 2016 - Quintiq, a Dassault Systèmes company and global leader in supply chain planning and optimization (SCP&O), announced today that its software platform has been selected by Unifeeder to optimize its feeder operations globally.

Unifeeder is the largest and most well-connected feeder and shortsea network in Europe. Its feeder services provide international shipping lines with links to 89 ports across Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and Northern Africa. Operating over 67 vessels and more than 12,000 port calls per year, its network forms a crucial part of regional and global supply chains.

As part of its plans to improve planning efficiency and vessel utilization, Unifeeder needed a dynamic planning platform that could optimize its master scheduling, incorporate its complex operational constraints, and take into account the shipping industry’s great demand variability.

Unifeeder found its solution in the Quintiq planning and optimization software platform. Quintiq incorporates Unifeeder’s constraints and rules, including soft rules, to provide a solution that will allow its planners to focus on producing robust and higher-quality plans instead of spending time manually matching demand forecast with capacity. They will also be freed up to perform higher-value activities such as evaluating different demand scenarios and further cost-optimizing opportunities.

The scenario planning and optimization capabilities that Quintiq offers will fulfill Unifeeder’s need for improved tactical plans. The Quintiq platform aims at integrating the company’s demand forecast data to provide its planners with a more reliable view of how they can move the forecasted volume in a more cost efficient way. Unifeeder will then be able to explore different demand scenarios and use the optimizer to reduce costs, maximize demand fulfilment, and meet SLAs. Its planners will benefit from a single view of plans and KPI dashboards that give immediate feedback on the impact of their planning decisions.

“The business benefits of optimization are becoming increasingly clear for the shipping industry and particularly for us at Unifeeder,” said Annemette Jepsen at Unifeeder. “Optimizing our operations with Quintiq will give us the advantage we need to maintain our lead in the market today and put us in a strong position to compete in the future.”

“Unifeeder gives us the opportunity to prove that even the highly dynamic and unpredictable world of container feeder operations can be optimized,” said Rob van Egmond, CEO at Quintiq. “We are proud that they have put their trust in Quintiq to plan their core business and we look forward to a long and productive partnership.
