News: Queensland Rail looks to the future with Quintiq

Quintiq, a Dassault Systèmes company and a global leader in rail solution planning and optimisation, announced today that Queensland Rail has selected its planning software to be a part of its Integrated Train Operating Solution (ITOPS). The Quintiq solution will assist Queensland Rail to effectively and efficiently manage its existing train fleet as well as the soon to be introduced New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) fleet.

March 10, 2016 - NGR consists of an order of 75 new six-car trains and the construction of a new maintenance centre to service them for the next 30 years. The NGR project is the largest single investment by Queensland in trains and will boost commuter services for the densely populated areas of South East Queensland. The significant increase to the train fleet is to meet growing demand and demonstrates the government’s commitment to public transport in Queensland.

Queensland Rail has also established a new Rail Management Centre (RMC) to help manage the growing fleet and complexity of managing the metropolitan rail network. The Quintiq platform will play a key role in the new RMC, such as Electronic Train Graphs (ETGs) and delivery of dynamic timetabling and fleet allocation capabilities. This will enhance the network’s incident management and recovery capabilities and optimise train operations.

“The ITOPS Project really is a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to provide our organisation with the tools we need for the future. It will be an exciting journey that will enhance our operational efficiency and optimise customer outcomes” said Kevin Wright, Chief Operating Officer, Queensland Rail.

“Passenger rail and rail freight are core sectors for Quintiq,” said Paul Shepherd, Vice President of Quintiq Australia and New Zealand. “Queensland Rail’s decision to select Quintiq validates our investment and focus in these complex and dynamic sectors. We are proud to have them join our rail portfolio which includes NTV (Italy), Eurailscout and Sydney Trains. These leaders recognize the value of automation and optimisation to improve their planning across multiple time horizons – from strategic long-term planning to disruption management on day-of-operations.”

In 2014, Quintiq and Sydney Trains won the Sydney Engineering Excellence Award (SEEA) and were named finalists in the national Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) for the Fleet Allocation and Recording System (FARS).
