News: LKAB selects Quintiq to provide ore transport planning for its mining operations
June 23, 2015 - Swedish mining company Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) announced today that it has selected Quintiq, a global leader in supply chain planning and optimization (SCP&O), to provide a transport planning solution for its mining operations in northern Sweden.
LKAB is the world's second largest producer of iron ore pellets. It's one of Sweden's oldest industrial companies and has contributed to the country's industrial development and export industry for over a century. It operates iron ore mines, processing plants, and harbors in Luleå, Kiruna, and Narvik (Norway).
Prior to engaging Quintiq, LKAB relied on Excel spreadsheets and the help of external parties to plan the transportation of iron ore between its terminals. But as operations grew and complexity mounted, LKAB realized that it needed to improve operational efficiency to resist the competitive pressures in the global market.
LKAB selected Quintiq for its deep experience and expertise in multiple industries including mining, rail freight, and workforce planning. The Quintiq solution is based on industry best practices and is configured to fit LKAB's business needs and goals 100%.
The Quintiq solution will help LKAB to manage and plan drivers, locomotives, and wagons more efficiently from its mines in Kiruna, Malmberget and Svappavaara to its two terminals in Luleå and Narvik (Norway). This is key to the LKAB37 project, which aims to increase annual output from 27 million tonnes to 37 million tonnes.
"We are pleased with our partnership with Quintiq. Their software will help us to achieve an increase in our annual iron ore output of up to 40%. As one of Sweden's oldest industrial companies, we will always strive to remain on the cutting edge of technology," said David Lövgren, Senior Manager Maintenance Technology at LKAB Malmtrafik.
Andreas Grundsell, Business Unit Director at Quintiq, said: "This collaboration with LKAB was a great fit for us. Our experience in the mining industry, as well as expertise and technical knowledge in running successful rail planning projects, proved to be invaluable in making this project a success. As we continue to expand in the Nordic region, we look forward to sharing future successes with LKAB and other organizations, no matter the industry."
