Numerical Modeling of a System Level Failure Evaluation of Populated Flexible PCBs Subjected to TwistingTension Loading

Flexible Printed Circuit Boards (fPCBs) are being used more extensively in portable electronic devices due to their reduced thickness and ability to bend and adapt to various shapes. These characteristics have a significant role in miniaturization and therefore fPCBs are going to be prevalent in the future of electronic devices. The failure analysis due mechanical loads induced by stretching, twisting and bending due user environment is a key point of product reliability.

A Multiscale Analysis of the White Brain Material with Axons as Bidirectional Orientated Fibers

Axonal injury within the white matter of human brain and spinal cord will lead to sever failure of the central nervous system and traumatic brain injury. In this paper the brain tissue is model with axons distributed with bidirectional orientation within the white matter of the brain. In the modeling procedure a repeating unit cell comprising of axons and extracellular matrix is modeled by Abaqus. This micromechanical modeling implements periodic boundary conditions and constraints on the unit cells.

Robust Execution of massive compute-intensive calculations with SEE

Using the SIMULIA Execution Engine (SEE) to perform multi-run analyzes like Design-ofExperiments-Studies, Monte-Carlo-Simulations or optimizations often generates a heavy computational load. If the simulations themselves are compute intensive, like 3D-FEM or CFD analyses, the execution is normally handed off to a load balancing system, like Sun GridEngine, LSF or PBS Professional. The simulations are then governed by these systems and are executed on dedicated compute farms or high performance computing clusters. When SEE triggers hundreds of analyses simultaneously, sometimes the load triggers system, network or hardware failures, which prevent a simulation from being executed successfully.

Abaqus Computational Analysis of Metal Foams under Dynamical Loading

Metallic foams provide low density, high specific stiffness, high energy absorption and good damping and are thus interesting alternatives for structural applications. Impact energy is dissipated through cell bending, buckling or fracture. On the other hand, results of the strain-rate and inertia effects during dynamic deformation of cellular metals are apparently conflicting. A better understanding is found in studies that show that the relative importance of the strain-rate and inertia effects depends on the impact velocity and the geometry of the structure, but still no particular formulation is generally accepted. In the present paper, computational dynamical analyses of Representative Volume Elements of Metallic Hollow Sphere Structures and RVE sets are performed considering various geometries, material properties and loading rates using Abaqus Standard and Explicit versions.

Dynamic Finite Element Analyses of a Spent Fuel Transport and Storage Cask with Impact Limiters by 9 Meter Drop Tests

The 9 meter drop onto an unyielding target is one of the important mechanical tests within the safety assessment of transport casks for radioactive material. In general, the cask is equipped with impact limiters to reduce the dynamic load on the cask body by absorbing a major part of the kinetic energy. The impact limiters are often made of wood or aluminium. In this study an elastic-plastic material model with volume change was used to describe the stress-strain behaviour of wood found in crush tests.

Vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring of composite structures

Vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring is a method to assess damage in structures, working in the principle that variations on the stiffness, mass or energy dissipation properties of the structure will alter its dynamic response. Composite laminate and sandwich structures are more often used in aircraft components. Composite damage features peculiar mechanisms, the most relevant being layer delamination in laminates, skin debounding in sandwich constructions and composite penetration. Delamination and debounding may be internal to the structure and not visible externally render difficult their assessment. These damage mechanisms will change the dynamic response of the structure that may be used to identify damage.

A Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulation Capability Using the Co-Simulation Engine

A multiphysics simulation capability suitable for fluid-structure interaction is presented that uses the Abaqus nonlinear structural dynamics solver and the Loci/CHEM computational fluid dynamics solver. The coupling is achieved using SIMULIA’s Co-Simulation Engine technology. The Co-Simulation Engine is a software component that allows the coupling of multiple simulation domains by coupling solvers in a synchronized manner.

Collaborative engineering process for multidisciplinary optimization of a gas turbine component

Today manufacturing companies are more and more often characterized by a growing product and processes complexity. Projects needs the participation of a pool of companies that have to collaborate in a multidisciplinary and integrated way following a defined PLM strategy. These challenges are meant to introduce a new way of working, based on innovation and global collaboration, both internally among different disciplines and externally between operations, administration, and maintenance and its suppliers. The development engineering department works with a know-how based on models algorithms and data coming from different key-disciplines as aerodynamics, heat transfer, mechanical integrity, combustion, materials, etc. For this reason the use of these topics in a multi-disciplinary process is often difficult due to the incompatibility of notation, informatics languages and IT platforms.

IMPROVED METHODOLOGY FOR SQUEAK & RATTLE ANALYSIS WITH ABAQUS AND CORRELATION WITH TEST RESULTS

In recent years car manufacturers have been working intensively on new ways to improve the quality of the interior trim since it is extremely important to the customer’s perception of quality and can be a source of after-sale complaints. Consequently, the study of squeak and rattle (S&R) has become one of the main concerns for car manufacturers. Simulation of S&R phenomena is a complicated issue to reproduce virtually, because they are difficult to study using methods based on eigenmodes due to the impossibility of using contacts in this type of FE model; since modal theory is based on the hypothesis of linearity. Software providers and automotive engineering companies have been working hard to provide tools and methodologies in order to be able to analyse these phenomena in the initial development phases.

Simulation of Lumbar Spine Biomechanics Using Abaqus

Biomechanics testing of the lumbar spine, using cadaveric specimens, has the advantage of using actual tissue, but has several disadvantages including variability between specimens and difficultly acquiring measures such as disc pressure, bone strain, and facet joint contact pressure. A simulation model addresses all of these disadvantages. The objective of this work is to develop a method to simulate the biomechanics of the lumbar spine.

Mixed Lagrangian Eulerian Method for TireRoad Interaction in Finite Element Vehicle Dynamic Simulation

In this paper, a new mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian approach for tire/road interaction is presented: this new methodology is based on a different road modeling principle, where the road profile is described in time domain rather than space domain. The aim is to reduce the contact problem dimension and therefore calculation time. Comparison between current practice and new approach has been developed to verify the equivalence of results.
