Simplification and automated modification of existing Isight-processes

Currently, the typical Isight user is a specialist in process integration, optimization and creation of complex processes. He can create complex processes with different external programmes quickly and has a good knowledge of data structure, interfaces and useful control scripts. If some problems appear, the expert user with his experience can react and solve the problem very quickly. By contrast, non-expert users need much more time to build or customise the same complex processes and to solve occurring problems. Therefore, there is a clear barrier for non-expert users to work on complex processes with Isight.

Modeling and Analysis Techniques for Suspension Rubber Bushings

Suspension rubber bushingsin full vehicle models are usually represented with nonlinear spring elements. However, when bushings are preloaded or deformed in diagonal direction, the spring element models tend to express inaccurate movement. In this paper, suspension rubber bushings are modeled with solid finite elements. We established a technique enabling to evaluate the nonlinear large deformation behavior ofrubber bushings. This modeling technique is also able to improve simulation accuracy compared to the conventional modeling technique.

Simulation-Driven Design of Restrained Pipe Joints

This paper shows how multiple analysis techniques converge in Abaqus/Standard to produce simulation-driven design of restrained PVC pipe joints. PVC is known to exhibit viscoelastic behavior as it approaches its glassy transition temperature. This is used to produce pipe sockets by heating and forming them over a mandrel. A type of pipe joint which is becoming very successful includes other elements such as special seals made or rubber and steel, and restraint mechanisms made of ductile iron, which remain trapped inside the socket when it cools. At room temperature, elastic-plastic behavior of PVC dominates. As the restraint mechanism grips a spigot inserted in the socket, the pipe is indented by sharp teeth, causing severe plastic strain and mesh distortion. This makes a good case for an Adaptive Langragian-Eulerian domain.

Optimization of Composite layers lay-up of an aeronautical component using an Isight-based intelligent decision advisor, iDA

This paper describes the use of an Isight-based system called intelligent Decision Advisor (iDA) in the composite layer lay-up optimization problem. iDA is a frontend interface developed to use Isight’s powerful explorative methods to achieve established design objectives. In this study, iDA is used to manage several hundreds of variables, and to improve the shape and positions, the orientation and the thickness of the composite plies and stack sequence of an existing wing pylon design of AleniaAermacchi. This process directly drives the design toward an immediate manufacturability with optimized stiffness, weight and cost. Finally the implications regarding the management of the whole simulation process, its multi-disciplinary aspects and its advantages to the company will be discussed.

Applying Sensitivity Analysis and Robustness Evaluation in Virtual Prototyping on Product Level using optiSLang

Reliability of portable devices becomes a serious issue as complexity of the devices grows and miniaturization trend continues. In case of dynamic applications durability against impact on hard surfaces is a standard requirement for mobile electronic devices, verified in drop tests. Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) methods and tools are used as means to accelerate the overall design cycle and to reduce time to market. In case of drop test simulations it is an important task to assess quality of simulation models and effect of different input parameters on results. This paper describes first results of a research project on development of an automated procedure of sensitivity analysis and robustness evaluation of product level simulation models used for drop test simulation.

Fatigue Modeling of a Powder Metallurgy Main Bearing Cap

Developing the ability to predict density distribution, monotonic plasticity, damage and the cyclic damage progression is imperative for the design of Powder Metallurgy (PM) components that will experience overloads during in-service life due to impacts, rough ground, and crash environments. In this paper, mathematical-based models for PM manufacturing process are developed, validated and implemented in user material subroutines VUMAT and UMAT to model the compaction and sintering processes.

Virtual design from nature: Kinematic modeling of the seahorse tail

Seahorses (belonging to the genus Hippocampus) and pipehorses are unique among fishes in being armed with robust body plates instead of scales, and in being able to bend their tail ventrally for use as a prehensile appendage. They lack a powerful caudal fin, making them very slow swimmers, which can hardly escape predatory fish. However, they have survived millions of years of natural selection, yielding a very well camouflaged fish with a highly specialized caudal skeleton.

Tire performance evaluation for severe snow traction

Snow traction is an important tire performance parameter for product applications in markets where snow is present for several months during the year. It is very difficult to perform multiple tests because proving grounds and consistent test conditions are available only for limited periods of time and due to prototyping and test expense. This paper deals with the simulation aspects of the snow traction test using Abaqus.

Automating Architecture Alternative Trades

This paper describes how advancements in simulation and optimization tools have facilitated architecture trade studies during the initial phases of the system design process. Laying out the architecture for a new system is traditionally done by drawing upon input from stakeholders, experts, and previous work to select a structure that is likely to meet system requirements. While this works well when adapting existing designs to new applications, it does not always provide solid selection criteria, especially when creating distinctly new or innovative systems. This can lead to conforming new systems’ architectures to known and trusted design structures, rather than considering novel and potentially superior but untested designs.

FEM analysis of a gearbox housing, for the calculation of stress and deflection characteristics

In the present study, a real case automotive gearbox housing is modelled, in order to investigate stress and deflection characteristics for a number of load cases. It incorporates the FE modeling of the housing, contacts simulation, assembly and operating conditions loading. Solution results are obtained and evaluated in accordance to the design requirements. Finally, a conclusion whether to further modify the design or proceed with building a prototype for testing is reached. The study was done utilizing ANSA pre-processor and Abaqus/Standard.
