Strength Prediction of Notched Woven Composite Plates using a Cohesive Zone Approach under Quasi-static Loading

The present paper is concerned with modelling damage and fracture in notched woven fabric composites. Previous experimental work has shown that damage at a notch in a variety of GFRP and CFRP composites based on woven fabric reinforcement comprises matrix damage and fibre tow fracture along the plane of maximum stress. It is these experimental observations that inform the failure modelling developed here, in which a cohesive zone approach is used within a 2-D finite element framework.

Simulation of residual stresses due to cold-expansion bushing installations. Application to Fatigue Life Evaluation

The cold expansion processes have been used for many years in the aeronautical industry in order to improve the fatigue life of structural components. The physical phenomenon underlining such improvement is well understood, however there is still not a recognized general method to provide accurate estimations for each specific problem. This work presents an attempt by Airbus Military (AIM) to develop a methodology based on analytical procedures in order to estimate the crack initiation in big aluminium alloy lugs fitted with bronze cold expanded bushings from Fatigue Technology Inc.

Using Simulation for the Improvement of Manufacturing Operations in Medical Devices

The solution of manufacturing problems in minimally invasive medical devices poses the quadruple challenge of providing solutions as soon as possible in order to maximize operation of the process lines, limiting the project to a budget which is considerably lower than usually allocated for R&D, obtaining results for fairly complex nonlinear problems with enough accuracy to detect the effect of dimensional variability in very small parts, and documenting the procedures thoroughly and formally for ulterior validation, approval and insertion into the product lifecycle management of devices whose impact on human lives is critical. This paper shows several cases in which these challenges are faced with the aid of nonlinear simulation using Abaqus/Standard.

Powder Metal Main Bearing Cap Durability and Fatigue Analysis using Density-Distribution-Based Mechanical Properties

Durability analysis of a powder metal automotive engine component main bearing cap is typically performed assuming uniform material properties. However, the mechanical properties of powder metal (PM) components vary significantly with density. Mississippi State University developed mathematical-based user material subroutines VUMAT and UMAT in Abaqus to model the compaction and sintering processes of powder metal components. This model can predict the distribution of material density during PM compaction analysis in Abaqus/Explicit. In this paper, based on the density distribution from compaction analysis of a PM main bearing cap, material properties are mapped onto the PM cap for durability stress analysis in Abaqus/Standard under typical automotive engine operating conditions.

Combining Finite Element Analysis with Experimental Tests to Generate Accurate and Verified FE models of Scaffolding Structures

With the worldwide building industry constantly growing, more and more scaffolding manufacturers are entering the market. In order to assure the safety of workers, the capacity of these scaffolding systems must be accurately determined and updated with the release of new requirements. SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden has developed methods in which Abaqus is combined with experimental test data to determine the load classification and permissible loads of scaffolding systems according to European standards.

Numerical-Experimental correlation of failure severity in seamless tubes

The investigated components are seamless tubes used as housings of hydraulic cylinders mounted on earth moving machines. Accidental high working loads such overloads or machine misusing can be probable during their life, in this perspective, the failure mode and the limit load over which a rupture can be expected becomes extremely important. With the aim of investigating the failure severity of these components, a crack modeling for stress analysis has been performed.

Modeling the Combustion of Pyrotechnic Materials inside Sealable Ammunition Containers Using Abaqus Explicit - CEL

Sealable ammunition containers are widely used by the U.S. Army to ensure safe transport and storage of various types of munitions for the warfighter. In the case of accidental ignition, ammunition containers are designed to fail in a way that minimizes risk to nearby personnel and reduces the chances for a sympathetic detonation. In the constant effort to improve the performance and safety of such containers, extensive live testing is required to assess new or modified designs.

Modeling the vibrations in a catalytic converter for diesel engine

This paper describes the use of the commercial code, Abaqus, to model the modal frequencies (vibrations) and the noise (acoustic wave propagation) in a catalytic converter used for diesel engine. A three dimensional model in CDF is used to first obtain the temperature distribution and the heat transfer coefficients, this information is then used to model the thermo mechanical performance of the converter in order to obtain the vibrations and the noise under real operation conditions.

Fatigue reliability analysis using Latin hypercube sampling method

Fatigue is considered to be one of the main causes of the degradation of mechanical properties in mechanical parts. Probability and reliability methods are appropriate for fatigue life prediction using the uncertainties which exist in fatigue material or process parameters. In this context, evaluating the risk on the fatigue simulation outputs according to these parameters represents the most important challenge. To run reference simulation model, mean values of input parameters are used.

Development of Automated Valve train Analysis and Optimization Process

The valve train system is one of the major component of internal combustion engine because of its influence on the performance, durability and NVH. In this study, a new valve profile design process using B-Spline curve is suggested. Since this new method maintains continuity of valve profiles, it is convenient to optimize the profile using Isight.

Using an Optical Measuring System for Identification of Material Parameters for Finite Element Analysis

When performing material testing usually global measurements are used for the calculation of material strains. Especially, when high strain rates of more than 100 1/s are examined those data are often unreliable. Within this paper the recently at EDAG introduced optical measuring system is presented and the identification of material parameters is explained. The comparison of experimental and numerical component test data of an automotive door trim demonstrates the advantages of such a system.

Ceramic Total Hip Liner Fracture Modeling in Abaqus using co-Simulation and Extended Finite Element Modeling

Due to concerns over particle generation in conventional metal-on-polyethylene hip bearings used in total hip arthroplasty, interest in advanced low-wear bearing alternatives such as ceramic-on-ceramic couples has reemerged. While ceramics demonstrate excellent compressive strength, the brittle nature of the material reduces tensile strength, possibly leading to catastrophic fracture when loads exceed material limits. Impingement between the femoral neck and acetabular liner gives rise to areas of extreme transient stress concentration, which have been clinically linked to fracture. This work presents methodology for the investigation of 3D ceramic fracture initiation/propagation using Abaqus’ co-simulation and extended finite element modeling capability.
