Stress and fatigue analyses of a PWR reactor core barrel components

The integrity of the nuclear reactor core barrel and its components is one of the most critical issues of the reactor pressure vessel internals due to the unacceptable consequences of their failure and due to the difficulty of their replacement. Especially for such components thermal fatigue is one of the significant long-term degradation mechanisms, due to the fact that thermal loadings lead to most fatigue relevant stresses and strains.

Efficient Modeling of Damage Processes in Heterogeneous Materials under Impact Load

A general computational approach for modeling of damage in heterogeneous materials and structures under dynamic load is the focus of the current work. The approach covers processes of both damage initiation and damage propagation. In addition, multiple damage modes are considered to capture complex mechanisms of material failure. The proposed approach is based on selection of two types of expected damage mechanisms, namely, interfacial and internal damage.

GMAW Finite Element Simulation

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process is being widely used in the automotive torque converter assembly line for joining and sealing purposes. This paper describes the modeling and simulation of the welding process using the finite element modeling technique. The commercial finite element program ABAQUS/Standard is used to model the 3D thermo-mechanical coupling of the process.

Adaptive Remeshing Method via Inversion of Element Anisotropy in Large Deformation Finite Element Analysis

The large deformation finite element analysis such as metal forming analysis usually involves processes to deform, stamp, or punch a part drastically, which causes great changes in shape of the part during the simulation. As the part is reshaped, the mesh elements are deformed, and element shape quality is decaying as analysis continues. To resolve this problem, it is common to adaptively remesh the part during the analysis to replace the unusable mesh with a new better quality mesh. The proposed method is an alternative adaptive remeshing method, which not only locally refines the mesh around the areas that are likely to experience large deformation, but also adjusts the mesh directionality and anisotropy to reduce the severity of element distortion as analysis continues.

Finite Element Models for Dynamic Analysis of Vehicles and Bridges under Traffic Loads

We present a finite element model which takes into account the dynamic interaction between a truck and the bridge over which it is passing. The truck-bridge system presented by Marchesiello (1999) and also used by Zhu (2002) is employed to verify our model. The vehicle is a 3D truck with seven degrees of freedom. The bridge is a continuous three-span slab.

Benefits of Simulation Process Automation for Automotive Applications

The use of iSight to automate Inergy's simulations related to automotive plastic fuel tank development is highlighted by three examples: 1. the static venting simulation, where the low added value part (finding the position of valves on the tank so that the customer's specifications are fulfilled) is automated. This allows the expert to focus on higher added value tasks. 2. the tank aging simulation, which consists in computing the permanent deformation of the fuel tank caused by the plastic creep. ISight permits to easily investigate different tank architectures at early stage of development. 3. the blow molding simulation is simplified so that non-simulation specialists are able to run it. This eases the access to simulation for technical experts.

Modeling the Cyclic Response of HY-80 Steel Under Dynamic Loading

A time-independent constitutive model for HY-80 (High Yield) steels with a yield plateau is outlined. The model couples the non-linear kinematic hardening concept with a memory surface in the plastic strain space, to account for progressive cyclic hardening/softening, and a pseudo memory surface in the deviatoric stress space, to correctly describe the plateau response. The model is incorporated into Abaqus/Standard through a UMAT. The performance of the model is validated against experimental data.

Designing Motorola Mobile Radio for Shock and Vibration Requirements

This paper presents the analyses techniques using ABAQUS to identify and prevent typical failure modes seen in shock and vibration testing. The analysis techniques are (i) Steady state response with base excitation for vibration requirement using implicit code, and (ii) Dynamic, explicit with impulse load at the base for shock using explicit code. These analysis methods are being used at Motorola to reduce overall development cycle time required to introduce a new product to market.

Application of Abaqus for Practical Postbuckling Analyses of Cylindrical Shells under Axial Compression

For the buckling problem of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression, a number of experimental and theoretical studies have been made by many researchers. In the case of the very thin shell that exhibits elastic buckling, experimental results show that after the primary buckling, secondary buckling takes place accompanying successive reductions in the number of circumferential waves at every mode shift on systematic (one-by-one) basis. In this paper, we traced this successive buckling of circular cylindrical shells using the latest in generalpurpose FEM technology.

The Effects of Overload on the Fatigue Life

Automotive vehicles undergo various ranges of road loads according to the driving conditions. Sometimes it experiences unusually large overload such as pot-hole impact or curb strike whose forces are several times of the vehicle weight. Those overloads may induce plastic deformations at some components and these plastic deformations reduce the fatigue life of the components. In some cases, the fatigue crack initiation points may be changed due to the residual stresses which were generated by the overloads. This study was performed to assess the effects of overload on the fatigue behavior of automotive suspension components and to develop a fatigue analysis methodology predicting the fatigue life under overload.

Integrating Business and Technical Workflows to Achieve Asset-Level Production Optimization

The pressure on the oil and gas industry to meet the growing demand for energy when faced with fewer technical professionals, more complex reservoirs, and increased global competition is making it more critical than ever before for operators to make quick, accurate, and informed field development decisions that efficiently leverage the expertise of seasoned technical professionals. With experienced, technical professionals in short supply, the industry is looking for information technologies that can extend the reach of technical experts and better ground highlevel business decisions in the scientific evaluation of the asset.

Stress Analysis Method for Bolt Thread Roots of Automotive Engine under Operating Condition

In order to analyze the stress at the thread roots of a bolt of an automotive engine under an operating condition, we developed a stress analysis method for it, which consists of a multibody dynamics analysis, a linear transient analysis and nonlinear static analyses. It is able to consider the motion of bolted structures, the contact behavior and the plastic deformations with practical calculation costs. In this paper, we showed that the developed method is applied to inline 4 engine systems as an example.
