FEA of Prosthetic Lens Insertion During Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is the most common surgery in America today. Modern surgeries require the opacified crystalline lens to be removed and for a prosthetic lens to be inserted through a suture-less incision during a 5-10 minute outpatient procedure. The industry is driving for smaller incisions by redesigning the lens and insertion device geometry in addition to new materials.

Coupled Euler Lagrangian Approach Using Abaqus Explicit in the Bird Strike Aircraft Damage Analysis

Bird impact damage in complex aircraft structure has been investigated using explicit transient dynamic analysis by Abaqus/Explicit in order to fully employ its large library of elements, material models and the ability of implementing user defined materials. The numerical procedure has been applied on the very detailed large airplane secondary structure consisting of sandwich, composite and metallic structural items that have been modeled with 3D, shell and continuum shell elements, coupled with appropriate kinematic constraints. Bird has been modeled using Coupled Euler Lagrangian approach, in order to avoid the numerical difficulties connected with the mesh. The impact has been applied in the area that is the most probably subjected to the impact damage during the exploitation.

BENEFITS OF INTEGRATION PLATFORMS IN PRELIMINARY AIRCRAFT DESIGN

An important step in the development of a new aircraft is the preliminary design, which determines the configuration itself and key parameters about cabin, fuselage, wing, landing gear, control surfaces and engines. The design has to fulfil a certain number of constraints, but also to optimize a given cost function. Therefore the engineering team has to investigate a wide range of fundamentally different design alternatives and provide numerical results by using a tool-chain of multi-disciplinary and multi-level methods.

Transmission Efficiency Prediction of a Metal Pushing V-belt CVT with Implementation of Control Logic

A simulation technology has been developed to predict the transmission efficiency of a metal pushing V-belt and pulleys that make up the drive system of a continuously variable transmission (CVT). When a CVT operates in an actual vehicle, pulley thrust pressure is adjusted by feedback control to maintain a speed ratio. This feedback control has been implemented, for the first time, in an existing simulation that predicts the dynamic behavior of a metal pushing Vbelt using Abaqus/Explicit version 6.8-1 analysis. The new simulation enables stable control of a target speed ratio when appropriate gains are set for each analysis condition.

Design of Oil Sump using Coupled Eulerian – Lagragian Technique

The performance of an IC engine has an ionic bond with the performance of lubricating oil system. Oil sump and Oil Suction Pipe is one such assembly. The oil sump acts as partially filled reservoir of lubricating oil. The oil pump sucks the oil through the oil strainer which is immersed inside the oil sump. Design of oil sump involves designing for capacity, layout, engine tilt angles, and NVH. This paper deals with design of oil sump for engine tilt angles.

Preliminary Design of a Composite Wing-sail

The brief for the boat is to set a new world outright sailing speed record at Portland, UK. The choice of location influences the overall concept from the outset, since the conditions are closer to real world conditions when compared to currently favored locations for speed sailing. The boat is configured to add at least 10 knots to the current record by setting a speed above 60 knots (111 km/h). At speed the boat hulls will fly above the surface using a wing in ground effect. The pilot is able to sail on both port and starboard tack and can actively control the craft in roll and height as well as yaw.

Cyclic Loading of a Rock Mass for Underground Gas Storage Applications

The use of Underground Gas Storage (UGS) is expected to increase considerably in the near future due to various factors. Many of the UGS wells require sand control. Expandable Sand Screens (ESS) have many advantages as a completion option in UGS wells. But there has always been a concern on the effects on ESS due to cyclic loading. The paper deals with the changes in the borehole that would be caused during annual injection and production cycles from the storage reservoir.

FEA of a proximal humerus fracture with a fixation plate

The fracture of the proximal humerus is the second most common injury to the upper extremity. In severe fractures, surgery may be necessary which can be in the form of a locking plate holding the bones in place. This study examines the effect of including a bonegraft alongside the locking plate. ScanIP and +ScanCAD (Simpleware Ltd) were used to segment the proximal humerus from a CT scan, and to introduce CAD data of the fixation plate and bonegraft. The combined model of image data (proximal humerus) and CADdata (fixation plate, bonegraft) was then meshed in +ScanFE (Simpleware Ltd) were materials and contacts were defined.

Influence of geometric imperfections on tapered roller bearings life and performance

Performance and life in tapered roller bearing is highly influenced by contact pressure distribution in the raceways which is also determined by the contact area and profile geometry of the bearing components (rollers and rings). This complex geometry together with non-Hertzian effects (local yielding, edge effects...) makes impossible a precise analytical calculation of the contact pressure distribution. This contact distribution is evaluated instead by numerical calculations using virtual prototyping techniques (i.e: the finite element method). The use of finite element procedures allows the inclusion on the life calculations of imperfections in the profile finishing as well as misalignment in the axle mounting and angle errors on the raceways.

Isight process for automatic data match on an Aero Engine Thermal Mode

The aim of the work is to define an automatic process and to combine specific Isight tools that allow engineers to match the thermal performance of an aero-engine turbine module with a thermal aero-engine FE Model. The thermal behaviors of a complex system are the result of strong interactions between the fluid-dynamics aspects and the heat balance within each component. All those phenomena are strictly connected and they are subjected to approximations coming from the input of the simulation model and from the interactions of different variables. These approximations are reflected on the final results.

Coupled Fluid Structure Interaction Simulation Using Abaqus CEL

For a system which involves a fluid medium contained inside a deformable structure, such as a fuel tank system, a simulation which couples the structure and fluid may be required depending on the system performance metric of interest. With the new CEL function, Abaqus can simulate a coupled fluid / structure dynamic event of several seconds real-time duration in days instead of weeks as compared to other available software. Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/Explicit CEL function can be used to create a seamless fuel tank system simulation method to assess the fuel tank assembly and road loading performance.

Failure Analysis of a 105mm Fin Deployment Mechanism

In order for artillery projectile guidance and control systems to meet precision performance requirements it is necessary to utilize fin stabilization rather than the conventional means of spin stabilization of artillery projectiles. Since the munitions are fired from a gun tube it is necessary for the fins to be stowed and secured during launch and then deploy once the projectile has left the muzzle of the weapon.
