Approximating MIG Welds with Abaqus Spot Weld Functionality

Representing MIG welds in FEA models is often a very laborious task in preparing the FEA Models. Traditional techniques range from TIEs to shells to solid elements. Using TIEs can be subject to mesh density and parameter choices for the TIE. Shell and solid representation can require significant geometric preprocessing. Presented here is a technique that uses Abaqus spot welds to approximate MIG welds. It will be shown that this representation of welds has high accuracy with minimal pre-processing required and insensitivity to mesh density. An Abaqus/CAE plug-in has been developed to automate this process. Examples comparing stiffness, stress and strain will be shown.

High-velocity impact damage modeling of laminated composites using Abaqus/Explicit and multiscale methods

The present work describes a multiscale methodology which has been developed for modeling of impact damage in the laminated composite structures. The methodology employs the High Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells (HFGMC) micromechanical model for the prediction of the local stress and strain fields, within the representative unit cell of the unidirectional composite material. The Mixed Mode Continuum Damage Mechanics (MMCDM) theory has been utilized to model damage within the composite unit cell at the micromechanical level. The MMCDM theory enables modeling of the microdamage nonlinearities at in-plane shear and transverse compressive loadings of the composite plies. Employment of the multiscale approach enables the application of the MMCDM damage model in structural analyzes.

Modeling of Reinforced Elastomeric Hoses

Reinforced hoses are used across industries, including hydraulic systems, fluid transport, and mooring systems. These systems consist of multiple layers of reinforcement, both woven and single fibers or cords, embedded in elastomeric matrices. This paper presents an example of reinforced hose simulation and discusses the challenges of embedding highly anisotropic reinforcements in a nonlinear rate-dependent elastomeric material. The discussion includes modeling the microscale interaction between individual reinforcements with a rubber matrix, particularly with respect to asymmetry between compression and tension, and small scale relaxation effects. The simulation results are compared with measurements of actual hose behavior.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE AIR

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is a phenomenon where static electricity discharge happens between two electrically charged objects when they come into contact with each other, such as the human body and an electronic device. This high voltage ESD pulse generated from the human body can enter the electronic device if touched, causing damage to IC circuits inside it. With increasing operating speed and decreasing operating voltage of electronic components the problem of ESD is a severe source of interference which can produce damage, upset or failure in electronic systems.

Finite Element Thermal Crack Analysis of Prestressed Double Tee Canopy Beam

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis is performed to investigate the crack of a prestressed double tee canopy beam due to thermal expansion. Concrete damage plasticity material model is employed to detect the potential crack of concrete beam caused by thermal loads. The bond between pre-stressed strands and concrete is modeled by tie, cohesive element and friction. Explicit modeling approach is selected due to the significant discontinuity in the threedimensional model. The potential crack pattern from FEA modeling indicates the actual crack as observed in field quite well.

Pre-filled Syringe Failure Analysis using Abaqus/Standard

Failure of pharmaceutical packaging incurs the risk of negative health outcomes and expensive product recalls. Pre-filled syringes represent a growing portion of the drug packaging market. During its working life, a syringe experiences stresses that may result in material damage. Specifically, the syringe barrel may develop microcracks that coalesce and propagate, causing the syringe to fracture and its contents to lose sterility.

Investigation on the influence of geometric parameters of rectangular hollow cross-sections on buckling of the structure

The effect of cross-sectional parameters on the local buckling behavior of a rectangular hollow section (RHS) under lateral compression is examined in this study through finite element modeling and optimization. The finite element model was first validated against experimental data. With good agreement observed between the experimental and FEA results, the validated FEA model in ABAQUS was used in conjunction with Isight to conduct an optimization study and examine the influence of cross-section parameters on the buckling behavior of the section. Cross-sectional parameters considered included the aspect ratio of the section, the thickness to width ratio of the web and the thickness to width ratio of the flange. For a target buckling load and given definite ranges of the width, height, flange thickness and web thickness, the best combination of parameters was arrived at using the optimization software Isight.

A Simulation Approach to Combine Multi-Scale Model Features with Failure at Composites Level for Short Fiber Reinforced Polymer

In order to facilitate the application of thermoplastic composites in the automotive industry for weight saving and fuel economy, an advanced simulation approach is applied to evaluate the performance of an injection molded short fiber reinforced composites beam. A fully coupled Digimat with Abaqus homogenization method for multi-scale modeling is explored and compared to an uncoupled Digimat with Abaqus approach which uses an Abaqus User subroutine. A failure model is calibrated to predict short fiber reinforced composites failure. The results obtained with this model are presented, demonstrating accurate prediction results. The developed model with homogenization features is able to distinguish the behavior of beam with different injection molded process and is validated by comparing predicted results with experimental data of beam flexure test under different boundary conditions.
