Coupled CFD and structural analysis for world outright sailing speed record preparations

The brief for the boat, v-39 Albatross is to set a new world outright sailing speed record at Portland Harbor, UK by 2013. The boat is configured to add at least 10 knots to the current record by setting a speed above 65 knots (120 km/h). At speed the boat hulls will fly above the surface using a wing in ground effect. The pilot is able to sail on both port and starboard tack and can actively control the craft in speed, roll and height as well as direction.

Interaction between Short Surface Cracks and Residual Stress Field in Shot Peened Titanium Samples

To enhance the fatigue life of metal components, frequently compressive stress is introduced to the surface layer. Although procedures such as shot peening have been practiced for many decades in other industries, an improved understanding of the fundamental mechanics that leads to the improved performance is desired. From a continuum mechanical point of view, the interaction between the crack and the stress intensity field is the factor determining whether the crack will propagate.

Finite Element Modelling of Orthopaedic Implants using Metal Foam

Cellular structures like metal foam have several interesting attributes to mimic the properties of human bone for designing orthopaedic implants. A finite element method analysis of the forging process of a simple-shaped metallic foam billet is carried out using mathematical models in order to obtain a 3D geometry of a complex form. In particular, the deforming behaviour of a metallic foam and the development of density gradients are investigated in order to produce a selected portion of a hip prosthesis, for replacement of human bone.

Bird Strike Simulations on Composite Aircraft Structures

Composite materials are increasingly being used for aeronautic primary structures such as wing components or fuselage panels. However, their major drawback is their vulnerability against transversal impact loads, which may lead to internal delaminations or intralaminar fiber/matrix failure. Such loads may arise from numerous impact scenarios, with bird strikes being one of the most relevant load cases. The focus of the current study is on the numerical modeling and simulation of high velocity impact loads from soft body projectiles on composite structures with ABAQUS/explicit.

Virtual testing of a composite cylindrical lattice structure for aerospace applications

Composite lattice structures manufactured with Advanced Fiber Placement are a promising weight saving solution for replacing the current aluminum and traditional composite structures for aerospace applications. A virtual testing procedure for designing lattice structures using FE commercial program Abaqus v6.9 was developed and used to design a composite cylindrical lattice for aerospace applications.

OPEN-Abaqus: New approach for coupling Design Of Experimentations and Abaqus solver

Abaqus is used by PSA Peugeot Citroën car company in order to dimension and validate engine and chassis components. As physical parameters influence the mechanical resistance, these parameters have to be chosen into the right range for a reliable product design. The PSA solution is to use the design of experiments directly & easily on Abaqus models in order to deliver better-quality products through accelerated evaluation of design alternatives. The users define the parameters of the Isight simulation process flow in the SIMULIA Execution Engine Webtop. This application is called OPEN Abaqus.

Behavior of Foundation Piles for Offshore Wind Energy Plants under Axial Cyclic Loading

Offshore wind energy plants promise to become an important source of energy in the near future. It is expected that within 10 years, wind parks with a total capacity of thousands of megawatts will be installed in European seas. The foundation of such offshore wind energy plants plays an important role in the stability of these structures. High demands have to be made concerning foundation design and construction methods to find economical and technically optimal solutions.

Numerical Modeling of a System Level Failure Evaluation of Populated Flexible PCBs Subjected to TwistingTension Loading

Flexible Printed Circuit Boards (fPCBs) are being used more extensively in portable electronic devices due to their reduced thickness and ability to bend and adapt to various shapes. These characteristics have a significant role in miniaturization and therefore fPCBs are going to be prevalent in the future of electronic devices. The failure analysis due mechanical loads induced by stretching, twisting and bending due user environment is a key point of product reliability.

A Multiscale Analysis of the White Brain Material with Axons as Bidirectional Orientated Fibers

Axonal injury within the white matter of human brain and spinal cord will lead to sever failure of the central nervous system and traumatic brain injury. In this paper the brain tissue is model with axons distributed with bidirectional orientation within the white matter of the brain. In the modeling procedure a repeating unit cell comprising of axons and extracellular matrix is modeled by Abaqus. This micromechanical modeling implements periodic boundary conditions and constraints on the unit cells.

Robust Execution of massive compute-intensive calculations with SEE

Using the SIMULIA Execution Engine (SEE) to perform multi-run analyzes like Design-ofExperiments-Studies, Monte-Carlo-Simulations or optimizations often generates a heavy computational load. If the simulations themselves are compute intensive, like 3D-FEM or CFD analyses, the execution is normally handed off to a load balancing system, like Sun GridEngine, LSF or PBS Professional. The simulations are then governed by these systems and are executed on dedicated compute farms or high performance computing clusters. When SEE triggers hundreds of analyses simultaneously, sometimes the load triggers system, network or hardware failures, which prevent a simulation from being executed successfully.

Abaqus Computational Analysis of Metal Foams under Dynamical Loading

Metallic foams provide low density, high specific stiffness, high energy absorption and good damping and are thus interesting alternatives for structural applications. Impact energy is dissipated through cell bending, buckling or fracture. On the other hand, results of the strain-rate and inertia effects during dynamic deformation of cellular metals are apparently conflicting. A better understanding is found in studies that show that the relative importance of the strain-rate and inertia effects depends on the impact velocity and the geometry of the structure, but still no particular formulation is generally accepted. In the present paper, computational dynamical analyses of Representative Volume Elements of Metallic Hollow Sphere Structures and RVE sets are performed considering various geometries, material properties and loading rates using Abaqus Standard and Explicit versions.

Dynamic Finite Element Analyses of a Spent Fuel Transport and Storage Cask with Impact Limiters by 9 Meter Drop Tests

The 9 meter drop onto an unyielding target is one of the important mechanical tests within the safety assessment of transport casks for radioactive material. In general, the cask is equipped with impact limiters to reduce the dynamic load on the cask body by absorbing a major part of the kinetic energy. The impact limiters are often made of wood or aluminium. In this study an elastic-plastic material model with volume change was used to describe the stress-strain behaviour of wood found in crush tests.
