The work presented demonstrates how Isight may be used to drive STAR-CCM+ and CATIA V5 for parametric optimization. In this example, carried out for the CFD group of a major US automotive OEM, a DOE study was performed with the aim of minimizing the pressure drop along an exhaust manifold. Geometric modifications were carried out automatically in CATIA V5, and passed to STAR-CCM+ for flow analysis.

In this paper, the different “built-in” material models based on the isotropic, kinematic and combined isotropic-kinematic hardening theories available in Abaqus/Standard are evaluated for carbon steels. Through a number of case studies the performance of the different “built-in” models are compared for different load paths. The similarities and differences between the available “built-in” material models are presented. Monotonic, quasi-static cyclic and dynamic load paths are considered. The results presented in this study are expected to provide important insight to practicing engineers dealing with inelastic material characteristics.

The wind-load response of braced and un-braced loading dock doors installed in industrial facilities in hurricane-prone areas was evaluated using Abaqus. Horizontal and combination of horizontal and vertical bracing designs were evaluated for a typical dock door made of steel slats sliding inside guiding rails and assembled to form a curtain rolled in a coil on the top of the opening. Analysis was performed using shell elements, hinged connections and selected boundary conditions. Result interpretation was based on three failure criteria: a conservative criterion based on the onset of plastic deformation that leads to the lowest critical winds, a 20% allowable plastic deformation criterion that leads to higher ratings and a slatpullout criterion that results in even higher wind ratings.

The opening mechanism in a beverage package, where a mixed mode failure occurs, is a rather complex phenomenon. A better knowledge in respect of fracture mechanics is needed for the proactive prediction of the overall opening performance. Reliable material data used for virtual simulation of the opening mechanism is extracted by characterization and calibration of the packaging materials. Knowledge of how to choose appropriate constitutive models for the continuum material and how the damage initiates and propagates to various loading conditions is of great interest.

Reinforced concrete deep beams (RCDBs) are generally designed using conventional methods such as empirical equations or strut and tie models. These methods however do not take into account the redistribution of forces resulting from non-linear materials’ behaviours. Indeed, it is a common belief that deep beams, shear walls and three-dimensional reinforced concrete structures are over-reinforced. The proper determination of the amount of reinforcement is therefore essential for a safe and economical design. In this paper an automated design technique using nonlinear finite element analysis is presented and validated with experiment for RCDBs.

Today, snow load damage test is mainly used to decide on roof panel’s style and its thickness. This test is much more important for a light commercial vehicle (LCV) because LCV has bigger roof area, more straight style and as a result of these two properties it has heavier roof panel than the other vehicle. Moreover, simulation is quite difficult and its tolerance is not less than 15 % because of not only panel’s post buckling behavior and material nonlinearity but also deformations on panel which highly depend on manufacturing process. In this study, the analysis parameters have been investigated and a correlation with physical test results has been set.

This paper presents an Abaqus/Explicit simulation of the impact event when a golf club hits a golf ball. This is a challenging subject for finite element simulations because of it is characterized by high strain rate behavior. The simulation emphasizes accurate material characterization and realistic model construction. Specifically, an advanced nonlinear viscoelastic material model from Veryst Engineering’s PolyUMod library with strain rate dependence is calibrated with high-rate testing data to accurately capture the highly nonlinear behavior of the golf ball materials during impact. At the same time, a detailed finite element model of the golf ball is constructed with multiple layers of structure.

Abaqus is often used for soil mechanical purposes to solve complex boundary value problems. Simulations of geomechanical boundary value problems are rather complex because of the complexity of the material which incorporates stress dependent material behaviour or different stiffness for loading and unloading conditions for example. Furthermore, typical soil consists of three phases including the soil skeleton, pore water and pore air which lead to complex interaction. Moreover, the loading conditions typical in geomechanics often cause large deformations of the soil continuum which has to be considered in the choice of the appropriate calculation tool.

Developing an expandable liner hanger system for the oil and gas industry represents an engineering challenge. Finite element analysis (FEA) using Abaqus can be effective at reducing development time and cost, and for optimizing the design with fewer prototypes. This paper summarizes the use of Abaqus/Explicit for FEA of an expandable liner hanger system that comprises an adjustable swage to expand the hanger body, slip ring to hang, and a packer to seal in a variable-diameter casing. Using the Abaqus-based FEA results, potential designs were evaluated on performance parameters such as required expansion force, hanging capacity, wickers penetration, and seal integrity.

Due to the extreme increase in computational power over the last years, numerical analyses are gaining more success in designing composite structures and components, taking into consideration complicated failure mechanisms. One crucial aspect is low velocity impact. It can produce devastating damage that can lead to premature failure of the component/structure. However, modelling the three-dimensional impact damage and its consequences is still a challenge. In this paper the most advanced features currently available in FE analysis (Abaqus/Explicit) have been used to predict the behaviour of a composite structure under low velocity impact.
