Simulating Engine Operation with Simpack

The Simpack Engine Modules enable the simulation of individual valves or entire valve trains. They help analyzing the crankshaft in operation. There are dedicated modules that serve the simulation of springs and complete chain systems. The Simpack Engine Modules also support the analysis of the timing mechanism and engine noise and vibration.

Simpack Hydraulic Lash Adjuster

The Hydraulic Lash Adjuster (HLA) provides a detailed representation of an HLA used in valve trains or as a hydraulic tensioner in, for example, chain and belt systems. A detailed description of the oil flow, including the mass effects of a plunger and valve ball, is provided based on geometry and oil properties.

Simpack Gas Force

Gas Force is a Control Element that models the gas forces acting in a cylinder during the combustion process. Acting gas force due to combustion/compression is calculated for a particular firing order, that is, different engine types. The calculation includes any deviation from the ideal crank angle for each crank pin due to torsion of the possible flexible crankshaft.

Simpack Dynamic Spring, Multi Mass Model

This module is based on a 1D multi-mass description that includes spring dynamics and nonlinear behavior due to oscillating coil masses and coil-coil contact. The Dynamic Spring Multi Mass Model is a discretized model consisting of rigid masses.

Simpack Dynamic Spring, Flexible Model + Segment Multi Mass Model

The Simpack SIMBEAM Valve spring Model is based on a 3D flexible Beam description that includes spring dynamics and nonlinear behavior due to coil-coil contact. Widening of springs, twisting of springs, and lateral movement are covered. From a detailed SIMBEAM spring pre-processing model, a 1D segment multi-mass model can be automatically derived to achieve high detail in spring vertical behavior, coupled with optimized calculation time.

Simpack Chain

Simpack Chain enables the user to perform chain system simulations. The module covers roller and bushed chains, silent (or inverted tooth) chains, and smart chains. Full elasticity is available for link-link, link-sprocket, and link-guide contact. All guides can be modeled as flexible bodies. Friction is calculated for all contact definitions, and all calculated quantities (for example forces, frictional power) are easy to access.
