Finite Element Analysis of Rubber Treads on Tracks to Simulate Wear Development

FEA applications to conduct product development at Camoplast Solideal, Inc. have been implemented to understand better the rubber track behaviors. Numerous simulation studies have already been conducted on the rubber tracks to understand their strengths and limitations. An important study is now being pursued to the development of a tool that will help us understand better the wear mechanisms happening on the treads of our rubber tracks. This paper will describe the process of simulating the mechanism of wear that occur at the treads when a track is rolled over a surface.

Structural Topology Optimization of Multilink Suspension System Using ATOM

A multilink suspension offers a good balance between ride and handling performance and packaging space efficiency. It is also complex in design due to changes in link loading and compliance at high articulation travel. Therefore, geometric and material non-linearity behaviors are important to consider when designing these types of suspension components. Structural topology optimization has been applied in linear structural design for many years. It is a proven method for developing concept designs to meet design requirements. However, most techniques of this type in use do not comprehend geometric and material nonlinearities. This may lead to suboptimal designs for components where these effects are important, such as multilink suspensions.

Numerical Model of the Structural Behavior of Energy Disipators, Based on Buckling Restrained Braces.

This article presents a numerical model of structural behavior of buckling restrained braces for the seismic protection of buildings. Such devices are usually installed in 2D frames as diagonal braces. Strong seismic horizontal excitations generate relevant interstory drifts and, hence, such braces experience shorteningelongation cycles; these members are designed to yield before the main frame, thus protecting it as kind of structural fuse.

Traction Prediction of a Smooth Rigid Wheel in Soil using Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian Analysis

Traction is an important performance requirement for a tire and is the force that propels a vehicle forward. Accurate traction prediction has value in reducing development cycle time and improving mechanistic understanding of tire traction performance. On a rigid surface like a paved road, traction can be predicted using an appropriate tire-road friction model in a simulation of tire performance. However, traction on a deformable medium like soil, snow, water, etc. is a more complex phenomenon. Available traction on soil is the sum of the friction at the tire-soil interface and the amount of soil strength extracted by the tire to propel itself.

Parameterization and Optimization of balloon expandable Stent

This paper discusses the use of such advanced technique to solve the stent design problems. The paper would cover the essence of Finite Element Analysis, FE Model Parameterization and Optimization. Finite element modeling (FEM) and analysis with SIMULIA is used to estimate stress distribution in the stent. Various design parameters are identified for carrying out optimization using ISight. Different stent designs are generated using the FE model parameterization tools in MeshWorks MORPHER. Optimization based on parametric FE model is carried out to identify best design.

Parametric optimization of an exhaust manifold using Isight, STAR CCM+ and CATIA V5

The work presented demonstrates how Isight may be used to drive STAR-CCM+ and CATIA V5 for parametric optimization. In this example, carried out for the CFD group of a major US automotive OEM, a DOE study was performed with the aim of minimizing the pressure drop along an exhaust manifold. Geometric modifications were carried out automatically in CATIA V5, and passed to STAR-CCM+ for flow analysis.

Modeling the Constitutive Response of Metals Under Complex Loading

In this paper, the different “built-in” material models based on the isotropic, kinematic and combined isotropic-kinematic hardening theories available in Abaqus/Standard are evaluated for carbon steels. Through a number of case studies the performance of the different “built-in” models are compared for different load paths. The similarities and differences between the available “built-in” material models are presented. Monotonic, quasi-static cyclic and dynamic load paths are considered. The results presented in this study are expected to provide important insight to practicing engineers dealing with inelastic material characteristics.

Modeling of Dock Door Bracings for Hurricane Winds

The wind-load response of braced and un-braced loading dock doors installed in industrial facilities in hurricane-prone areas was evaluated using Abaqus. Horizontal and combination of horizontal and vertical bracing designs were evaluated for a typical dock door made of steel slats sliding inside guiding rails and assembled to form a curtain rolled in a coil on the top of the opening. Analysis was performed using shell elements, hinged connections and selected boundary conditions. Result interpretation was based on three failure criteria: a conservative criterion based on the onset of plastic deformation that leads to the lowest critical winds, a 20% allowable plastic deformation criterion that leads to higher ratings and a slatpullout criterion that results in even higher wind ratings.

Is it possible to open beverage packages virtually?

The opening mechanism in a beverage package, where a mixed mode failure occurs, is a rather complex phenomenon. A better knowledge in respect of fracture mechanics is needed for the proactive prediction of the overall opening performance. Reliable material data used for virtual simulation of the opening mechanism is extracted by characterization and calibration of the packaging materials. Knowledge of how to choose appropriate constitutive models for the continuum material and how the damage initiates and propagates to various loading conditions is of great interest.

Experimental Verification of Automated Design of Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams

Reinforced concrete deep beams (RCDBs) are generally designed using conventional methods such as empirical equations or strut and tie models. These methods however do not take into account the redistribution of forces resulting from non-linear materials’ behaviours. Indeed, it is a common belief that deep beams, shear walls and three-dimensional reinforced concrete structures are over-reinforced. The proper determination of the amount of reinforcement is therefore essential for a safe and economical design. In this paper an automated design technique using nonlinear finite element analysis is presented and validated with experiment for RCDBs.
