Governments have imposed operator and community noise regulations, and a failure in the acoustic development of a product can lead to delays and expensive countermeasures to meet those requirements. In addition, cooling fan noise acoustics is a perceived quality issue that can affect brand image and customer satisfaction. Given the regulations and growing importance of acoustic comfort in these competitive markets, there is high value in addressing cooling fan, flow-induced noise problems as early as possible during product development.

The development of high-lift systems is a major step in the design of modern aircraft and has a strong influence on the overall aircraft performance and cost. Many trade-offs must be considered, including performance, maximum lift, weight, cost, and noise. Today, the design and test of high-lift systems still requires many months of wind tunnel tests. Wind tunnel tests are costly and generally do not fully represent real flight conditions accurately — installation effects can influence the results, small-scale models cannot fully resolve all geometric details, and flight Reynolds and Mach numbers cannot be reproduced easily.

An HVAC system is complex, consisting of a blower and mixing unit coupled to many ducts through which air is transported to various locations, including faces and feet of front and rear passengers, as well as windshield and side glass defrost.

A new method is introduced for conducting blast load analyses using the new CoupledEulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) capability of Abaqus/Explicit. In the past, either a 1-D blast code or tabular data was used to determine a pressure vs. time curve that would be applied to the exterior surfaces that were assumed to interact with the blast wave. These pressure curves were generated using knowledge of the amount/type of explosive and line-of-sight distance away from the explosion. While this method remains valid, with increasingly complex structural geometry, oblique surfaces, and with corners facing the blast, the amount of overhead required to analytically determine the necessary pressure loading for each of the various surfaces becomes exhaustive.

Cranioplasty is a surgical treatment that uses cranial prostheses to restore skull bone defects. However, the reconstruction of large osseous defects is still challenging. A method of treatment was developed at the MUMC in a collaboration of radiologists, computer engineers and cranio-maxillofacial surgeons where Titanium and Polyetheretherketone were used to manufacture the implants. The purpose of the present work - performed at the AME - was to build a simulation model to investigate the effect of stresses on the aforementioned prostheses, with a focus on fixation screws and bone-implant interface.

In developing weapon systems for the warfighter, the US Army uses modeling and simulation tools to support the design, test and manufacturing of these systems. One of these tools is Abaqus/Explicit, including the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian capability CEL. The addition of CEL in version 6.7EF-1 opened the door to a new realm of problems that could not be previously be modeled. With the addition of this new capability came the need for internal validation to establish a level of confidence for the class of problems of interest to the U.S. Army. Over the course of 2 years, several validation problems were modeled and the results compared to either experimental or analytical results.

Main function of wiper system is that secure a clear view to driver by removing the various obstacles, such as rain, snow and dust. To obtain optimized performances of wiper system under the consideration of many factors, the applications of CAE are needed. We developed FE analysis techniques based on ABAQUS can evaluate the wiping performance at the initial design stage. Also, It's possible to calculate durability and strength of wiper links for various loading conditions.

The design of an industrial product involves the contribution of two main groups of technicians: those who propose design solutions and those who analyze their performances from the points of view of various physical disciplines. Their jointed efforts are aimed at finding a trade-off between several, and sometimes conflicting, needs. Such a process is often very time-consuming, being heavily influenced by the implementation of the procedures for the analyses. This process could be improved by reducing the time spent to perform repetitive actions such as the built-up of the mathematical models, so leaving the analyst more time for carefully assessing the results and propose modifications to the designs.
