Application of CAE to Optimize Wiper System on Wiping and Fatigue Performance

Main function of wiper system is that secure a clear view to driver by removing the various obstacles, such as rain, snow and dust. To obtain optimized performances of wiper system under the consideration of many factors, the applications of CAE are needed. We developed FE analysis techniques based on ABAQUS can evaluate the wiping performance at the initial design stage. Also, It's possible to calculate durability and strength of wiper links for various loading conditions.

First Experience with Simulia's Headform Models for Pedestrian Protection Analysis

The development of countermeasures for pedestrian protection in automotive design is based on numerical analysis. The quality of the development depends on the quality of the provided impactor models. Here, the requirements of pedestrian protection testing and the standard procedure of the numerical analysis are explained. First experience with the recently by Simulia developed headform models are described.

Process Automation for the Construction of a Finite Element Model of a Diesel Powertrain

The design of an industrial product involves the contribution of two main groups of technicians: those who propose design solutions and those who analyze their performances from the points of view of various physical disciplines. Their jointed efforts are aimed at finding a trade-off between several, and sometimes conflicting, needs. Such a process is often very time-consuming, being heavily influenced by the implementation of the procedures for the analyses. This process could be improved by reducing the time spent to perform repetitive actions such as the built-up of the mathematical models, so leaving the analyst more time for carefully assessing the results and propose modifications to the designs.

Seismic Response of Floating Roof Storage Tanks Contact Pressure Analysis

This paper discusses an approach used in Abaqus to calculate the stresses and deformations of a liquid storage tank floating roof under seismic loading. It represents a novel application of contact theory to achieve a solution to this problem. The method is validated by a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) finite element analysis using actual earthquake ground accelerations.

A Collaborative Engineering Platform for Supporting Design Optimisation of Advanced Aero Engine Sub-Systems

Modern engineering design optimisation processes require an increasing distribution of calculation activities between distributed collaborating teams, laboratories, Universities and companies. The aerospace industry has an increasing need to establish efficient Collaborative Frameworks between partners with the aim at reducing design redundancies and accelerating the required design optimisation loops, moving the focus from separated centres towards a strongly connected innovation network. This paper will present an Italian collaborative innovation network involving Avio S.p.a. and his two university research centres Great Lab and ePaintLab. The scenario presented is focused on the collaborative network set-up aiming at addressing advanced multi-disciplinary design optimisation strategies supporting next generation of jet engine subsystems design.

Evaluating Hearing Protection Comfort Through Computer Modeling

The model simulated the insertion and stress relaxation of the hearing protection devices. Results from these models were compared against discomfort measured in use. The model results show that discomfort is a function of contact pressure and area. Average contact pressure and total contact force were identified as the key metrics that correlate to comfort ratings from the use studies.

Onset of levitation in thrust bearing: FSI study using Abaqus-FlowVision coupling

Lift force formation in a thrust bearing of 800-tons rotor of electric power station is discussed in the given paper. The problem is solved numerically. Direct coupling between finiteelement system Abaqus calculating stress and strain state of an bearing parts and finite-volume system FlowVision-HPC calculating oil flow in gap between a collar and a shoe of bearing is used. The shape of the gap between the shoe and the collar, the clearance value, the moment of the friction force, and the temperature distribution of oil over the clearance are determined.

POST-CRACKING BEHAVIOUR OF A WIND TURBINE CONCRETE TOWER

The paper deals with the dynamic performance of a simply reinforced concrete tower built using prefabricated elements. The main uncertainty of this strategy stems from the possible cracking of the concrete and its implications on the stiffness, natural frequency and dynamic amplification of the tower.

FEA of Prosthetic Lens Insertion During Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is the most common surgery in America today. Modern surgeries require the opacified crystalline lens to be removed and for a prosthetic lens to be inserted through a suture-less incision during a 5-10 minute outpatient procedure. The industry is driving for smaller incisions by redesigning the lens and insertion device geometry in addition to new materials.

Coupled Euler Lagrangian Approach Using Abaqus Explicit in the Bird Strike Aircraft Damage Analysis

Bird impact damage in complex aircraft structure has been investigated using explicit transient dynamic analysis by Abaqus/Explicit in order to fully employ its large library of elements, material models and the ability of implementing user defined materials. The numerical procedure has been applied on the very detailed large airplane secondary structure consisting of sandwich, composite and metallic structural items that have been modeled with 3D, shell and continuum shell elements, coupled with appropriate kinematic constraints. Bird has been modeled using Coupled Euler Lagrangian approach, in order to avoid the numerical difficulties connected with the mesh. The impact has been applied in the area that is the most probably subjected to the impact damage during the exploitation.

BENEFITS OF INTEGRATION PLATFORMS IN PRELIMINARY AIRCRAFT DESIGN

An important step in the development of a new aircraft is the preliminary design, which determines the configuration itself and key parameters about cabin, fuselage, wing, landing gear, control surfaces and engines. The design has to fulfil a certain number of constraints, but also to optimize a given cost function. Therefore the engineering team has to investigate a wide range of fundamentally different design alternatives and provide numerical results by using a tool-chain of multi-disciplinary and multi-level methods.

Transmission Efficiency Prediction of a Metal Pushing V-belt CVT with Implementation of Control Logic

A simulation technology has been developed to predict the transmission efficiency of a metal pushing V-belt and pulleys that make up the drive system of a continuously variable transmission (CVT). When a CVT operates in an actual vehicle, pulley thrust pressure is adjusted by feedback control to maintain a speed ratio. This feedback control has been implemented, for the first time, in an existing simulation that predicts the dynamic behavior of a metal pushing Vbelt using Abaqus/Explicit version 6.8-1 analysis. The new simulation enables stable control of a target speed ratio when appropriate gains are set for each analysis condition.
