Realistic Modeling of Structural Steels with Yield Plateau Using AbaqusStandard

A new model for structural steel with capabilities to model yield plateau, as well as cyclic behavior is introduced. The model is incorporated into Abaqus/Standard through UMAT. Numerical results are presented for an application in earthquake engineering, where a steel bridge pier is excited with a quasi-static cyclic lateral load. Hysteresis loops and buckling patterns obtained from the computational model are compared with published experimental results.

Design and drop test simulation of a helicopter skid landing gear with Abaqus/CAE

The aim of this paper is to study the impact of the manufacturing process of a skid landing gear on its performance during drop test simulation. A complete methodology is proposed to implement it on Abaqus. When a new landing gear design is to be designed, it has to be validated by experimental drop tests, and has to demonstrate the same overall impact resistance and energy absorption capability as well as being of similar or reduced weight. As this approach is rather expensive, an analytical approach validated experimentally has been used and yielded a complete methodology for drop tests simulation using dynamic explicit finite element codes.

Simulations of Ballistic Impact on Woven Fabric

Woven fabrics are an integral part of key defense and structural systems, including personal protection (body armor) and vehicles (HMMWV). Textile-based armor, for example, has proven an effective substitute for heavier materials. With the proliferation of such materials, the demand for computationally efficient models is becoming ever more acute. Modeling woven fabrics is challenging, in particular, due to the need to capture the fabric response at both the macroscopic scale of the fabric and the “mesoscale” of the yarns that comprise the weave. Here, we utilize a continuum-level modeling technique for woven fabrics that captures the macroscopic response of the fabric as well as the evolution of its mesostructure with deformation in a single efficient modeling step.

Isight Optimization of Material Parameters used in the Abaqus Worldwide Side Impact Dummy

Finite element representations of crash test dummies are widely used in the simulation of vehicle safety systems. The biofidelity of such models is strongly dependent on the accurate representation of the nonlinear behavior of the constituent rubber, plastic, and foam materials. In this Technology Brief, an automated Isight optimization workflow for the calibration of material parameters is presented. Using component models from the Abaqus Worldwide Side Impact Dummy (WorldSID) we will validate one of the calibrated material parameters by comparing the response of several dummy sub-assemblies with experimental data.

X-FEM for Abaqus Toolkit for Automated Crack Onset and Growth Simulation: New Development, Validation, and Demonstration

A software tool for automated crack onset and growth simulation based on the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) is developed. This XFA tool for the first time is able to simulate arbitrary crack growth or composite delamination without remeshing. The automated tool is integrated with Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/CAE via the customization interfaces. It seamlessly works with the Commercial, Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Abaqus suite. The usability of the toolkit is illustrated through a series of industrial problems.

Abaqus-based verification of the Rayleigh damping matrix in dynamic analyses for NPP civil structures

In dynamic analysis of NPP civil structures the most suitable method proved to be the method of direct integration of equations of motion of the structure-soil system. This method takes account of geometrically nonlinear effects and dashpots with high level of attenuation. In addition, this method allows for receiving a highly effective solution for some types of NPP civil structures. However, the analysis of resultant response spectra has showed a high level of spectral accelerations at elevations of equipment arrangement.

2-D Tank Sloshing Using the Coupled EulerianLaGrangian Capability of Abaqus/Explicit

Tank sloshing has been a unique challenge in many civil, aerospace, and energy applications, and it can cause forces that are difficult to predict using traditional simulation techniques. Abaqus/Explicit includes a coupled Eulerian-LaGrangian (CEL) capability that is useful for tank sloshing simulations. The CEL capability allows for the interaction between the LaGrangian tank domain where the material is fixed to the mesh and the Eulerian fluid domain where material can flow through the mesh. The use of Eulerian elements removes the problem of extreme element deformation associated with LaGrangian fluid meshes.

Lateral Torsional Buckling of Long Span Suspension Bridge: Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis Under Wind Load

There are plans of constructing bridges longer span like Messina strait bridge. This trend causes the necessity of discussing on the problems of instability analysis such as lateraltorsional buckling. However, lateral torsional buckling analysis of long span bridge is not sufficiently taken yet. For that reason, we apply the Abaqus/Standard to solve the high nonlinear problem. The analysis object is Akashi-kaikyo Bridge which is the longest bridge in the world. This paper presents how to analyze the lateral-torsional buckling of long span bridge applying wind load.

FE Analysis of Firearm Locking Systems

In a firearm the firing cycle is a high-speed dynamic event, of short duration and highly non-linear during which its components are subjected to pulse loads. In the design of any firearm choosing the locking (breech) system is the fundamental starting point as this will guarantee that the cartridge case is adequately supported to withstand the tremendous rearward thrust exerted by the powder gases. The breech system consists of a group of high strength components the task of which is to keep the rear portion of the barrel closed for a certain time period, until the pressure of the powder gases has dropped to an operating limit at which the breech may be opened safely for completing the firing cycle.

Simulation of a Vehicle Hood in Aluminum and Steel

In this study, carried out by fka, the hood of the VW Golf V is taken as an example to analyze the potential of a hybrid construction of aluminum and steel. Structural stiffness, oil canning and dent resistance behavior are analyzed using Abaqus/Standard. With the objective of reducing the total hood weight, the performance of the hood is compared to reference values of the series production steel hood. The simulated variations show different lightweight potentials. Taking the material costs into account, a first attempt for an improved hood is made.
