Uses of AbaqusStandard in Failure Analysis

The capabilities of Abaqus as a design tool are widely known, but it is also a very effective tool for failure analysis and forensic engineering. This paper examines two case studies in which Abaqus/Standard was used to assist in determining the cause of failure. In the first instance, a motorcycle wheel was found severely deformed and broken after an accident. At issue was whether the wheel failure was caused by impact with the road after a “wheelie” or a concrete block after loss of control. Abaqus/Standard was used to simulate these loading conditions, which required contact and highly nonlinear material behavior.

Modeling of Steel Ropes

Steel ropes are used in lifting applications, aerial ropeways, structures and buildings. To suit all these applications, ropes exist in a large variety of constructions. Their commonality is the build-up from individual wires. They are arranged in a spiral geometry and are in contact with each other. The paper shows an approach in modeling steel ropes with Abaqus with the goal to simulate properties like elongation, torque and turn. The FE predictions are compared with proven analytical methods and test results.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE CONTACT

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is a phenomenon where static electricity discharge happens between two electrically charged objects when they are in close proximity, such as the human finger approaching an electronic device. The high current pulse generated by the discharge process can flow into the electronic device, causing damage to internal PCBs and IC devices. With the trend in the electronics industry to increase operating speeds and decrease operating voltages of electronic components, devices are even more susceptible to ESD and designing-in protection to avoid damage, upset or failure is essential.

Prediction of residual stresses in bridge roller bearings using Abaqus

An analysis of bridge roller bearings was performed using Abaqus as part of a failure investigation. Finite element analyses were conducted to gain an understanding of the stresses caused during operation and explain the possible cause of failure. Models of the bearings were required to represent the contact between the roller and plates, daily movement of the load and the non-linear behaviour of the material. An important output was prediction of residual stresses along the contact area of the rollers, induced by repeated rolling as the bridge expands due to daily and seasonal temperature cycles.

Tube stamping simulation for the crossmember of rear suspension system

A recent innovation project at Magneti Marelli Suspension Systems aims to test the feasibility and performance of an innovative and patented shape for the crossmember of a rear suspension system. The stresses under operating loads and the elasto-kinematic performance of the suspension greatly depend on the stiffness and shape of the crossmember. In this paper the simulation contribution to this project regarding the multi-step stamping process is presented. Abaqus Standard and Explicit have been used to manage the forming operations, re-positioning and spring-back. The software has succeeded in anticipating some critical issues in the tryout phase, thus reducing time and optimizing the component, by analyzing virtually a number of variants.

Analyzing Geomechanical Effects while Drilling Salt Wells through Numerical Modeling

Santos Basin is one of the most promising basins of Brazil, recently it was discovered light crude oil of 30o API (American Petroleum Institute), this reservoir of high productivity is located below a salt layer of two thousand meters of thickness. Salt also known as an evaporite rock is found in many hydrocarbon basins around the world. The objective of this work is to determine the effect of the fluency (creep) in salt during and after the drilling of the well, through numeric simulation. At first it is shown a validation of Abaqus finite element program comparing results from literature and then it is shown a simulation of a 3D vertical salt wellbore.

Fast Setup and Integration of Abaqus on HPC Linux Cluster and the Study of Its Scalability

High-performance computing (HPC), the massive powerhouse of IT, is now the fastest-growing sector in the industry, especially for the oil and gas industry, which has outpaced other US industries in integrating HPC into its critical business functions. HPC can offer greater capacity and flexibility to allow more advanced data analysis, which usually cannot be handled by individual workstations.

Evaluating the Impact of Non-Linear Contact Modeling in Connecting Rod Durability Analysis.

The immense reciprocating energy transfer in a connecting rod leads to durability concerns in an automotive engine design. The resulting cyclical compressive and tensile stresses derive from the dynamics initiated by the mass inertial forces, the combustion compressive forces, and the resulting reaction forces. Three vital components to this analysis are the effective pressure in the cylinder, crankshaft dynamics and the connecting rod dynamics. Using validated data of effective combustion pressure and the corresponding crankshaft dynamics, the connecting rod load dynamics were obtained. These loads are robustly interacting with the connecting rod through the contact of journals and bearings.

Simulation of End Milling on FEM using ALE Formulation

: In end milling, cutting forces and residual stresses need to be precisely predicted in order to improve the quality of the workpiece. Numerical simulation has however not been very successful using the Lagrangian formulation in Finite Element Analysis. This is partly because there is no satisfactory and accurate separation criterion used in the modelling procedure. The results are found to be highly sensitive to the separation criterion used. End milling process simulation by the use of the Finite Element Method was investigated in this paper with an Arbitrary Lagrangian Formulation (ALE).

Performance of an office building in fire

The fire resistance of steel framed multi story buildings and their ability to withstand exposure to fully developed fire conditions without the need for all structural members to be protected with insulating material (passive fire protection) has received significant attention in recent years. This has been based around determining patterns of partial passive fire protection in accordance with sound fire engineering procedures that will ensure satisfactory performance in severe fires. A suitable procedure is the Slab Panel Method (SPM), which has been developed from a programme of small and large scale experimental testing under both Standard Fire and natural fire conditions, in conjunction with implicit and quasi-static explicit simulations.

Finite Element Prediction of Progressively Formed Conical Stockpiles

This paper presents the finite element modelling of a conical stockpile using Abaqus. The effect of construction history was realized by simulating the progressive formation of the conical pile. This was achieved by discretising the final geometry of the stockpile into multiple conical layers and then activating each layer sequentially. The effects of the elastic and plastic parameters were explored. The results show that a pressure dip may or may not be predicted depending on the constitutive model and the values for the model parameters. The study also shows that modelling the conical pile in one single step does not produce the pressure dip. It further shows that the central pressure dip is predicted using a relatively small number of layers and the magnitude of the dip is not sensitive to increasing number of layers, which is in contrast with one previous study.

Numerical Study of Metal Fatigue in a Superelastic Anchoring Stent Embedded in a Hyperelastic Tube

In this study we compare various way of quantifying high cycle radial fatigue behavior in a percutaneous Mitral repair device using Goodman methods. In order to provide an improved representation of the tissue-device interaction, we use an Ogden hyperelastic model to simulate the native vessel with parameters obtained from pressure-diameter test data of human cadaver heart coronary tissue, and published data presented in previous work. We also examine how the computed peak tensile strains at the surface of this device differ from the values computed at integration points in the 3D and the same integration point values extrapolated to the nodal points and averaged over adjacent elements.
