Objective

As part of the continuing efforts to improve realistic simulation, modeling fracture & failure has been an area of development for Abaqus. Fracture and failure modeling allows for product designs that maximize the safe operating life of structural components. Abaqus offers many capabilities that enable fracture and failure modeling. Abaqus 6.9 introduced a new capability called XFEM (eXtended Finite Element Method). This capability alleviates the shortcomings associated with traditional approaches that require meshing cracked surfaces and updating the mesh for a growing crack.

This seminar first provides a discussion of some of the conventional FEA techniques for predicting stress intensity factor and J-integrals. Then the focus will be on updating your skills to using the new XFEM technique. During the seminar's lectures and workshops users will learn about:

  • Proper modeling techniques for capturing crack-tip singularities in fracture mechanics problems
  • Using Abaqus/CAE to create meshes appropriate for fracture studies
  • Calculation of stress intensity factors and contour integrals around a crack tip using conventional techniques and using XFEM
  • Simulating crack growth using the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM)

Who Should Attend

This seminar is recommended for engineers with experience using Abaqus. Experience with Abaqus/CAE is desirable.

Academic Discount
A discounted registration fee of $200 is offered to all academic institutions on a space available basis. This discount cannot be combined with the multiple attendee discount. The registrations with the academic discount will not include workshop support.

What is Included

Electronic copies of the training notes will be provided to each registrant for their personal use. Every registrant will also receive a copy of Abaqus Student Edition. Many of the topics covered in this course can be practiced using Abaqus Student Edition; however, to ensure that you can perform all the course workshops fully, you will need access to a licensed copy of Abaqus. No additional Abaqus licenses will be provided.
