BIOVIA is looking for a world-class computational chemist and thought-leader to join our R&D group in San Diego, CA. This role focuses on the design, development, and maintenance of BIOVIA life sciences modeling and simulation applications. This role will work closely with the Product Management organization and lead an R&D team to develop new scientific methods for our modeling and simulation products.
What will your role be?
- Develop a vision and strategy for modelling and simulation in industry R&D in the age of Machine Learning.
- Lead the life sciences modeling and simulation development group.
- Identify and manage the development of novel scientific methods and algorithms in the area of small molecule drug design, protein design, and related biomolecular simulation methods.
- Validate and publish novel scientific methods.
- Evangelize choices, quality, and methods in Discovery Studio and associated products; interacting with customers to improve usability.
- Work with marketing, scientific and technical colleagues, and project management towards a clear definition of development goals and product specifications.
- Design next generation cloud based user paradigms for working with advanced molecular modeling and simulation methods.
The challenges ahead
- Maintain and enhance existing BIOVIA modeling and simulation applications.

- Closely coordinate with Quality Assurance and other development teams to ensure thorough test coverage of all newly developed functionality.
- Design next generation cloud-based user paradigms for working with advanced molecular modeling and simulation methods.
Your Key Success Factors
- PhD in computational chemistry/biology or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years' relevant experience required.
- Strategic leadership experience is required.
- At least 3 years of experience with scientific software development and a proven track record of complex software delivery.
- Industry experience at a pharmaceutical / biotech or as an academic Principal Investigator is highly desirable.
- Strong theoretical understanding of and expertise in the modeling of protein-ligand interactions.
- Experience with deep learning techniques, e.g., AlphaFold, is highly desirable.
- Experience in the development and validation of novel methods for small molecule drug design.
- Strong record of peer reviewed publication
Compensation for the role will be commensurate with experience. The total expected compensation range will be between $175,000.00 and $200,000.00, representing the base salary (or annualized salary based on estimated hourly compensation) and target bonus.
