INTERNSHIP: CFD Multiphase Flow R&D - July - December 2023

As a PowerFLOW R&D group Intern, you will execute and analyze numerical experiments for development of multi-component and multi-phase flow solvers. You apply your knowledge of fluid dynamics to understand complex flow behavior, investigate simulation results and validate advanced numerical solvers. You will have an opportunity to appreciate and apply cutting-edge technologies in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD).


This is a paid internship spanning 6-months, approximately July thru December 2023 and is based at the headquarters for Dassault Systemes in the Americas, 175 Wyman St, Waltham, MA.

What will your role be?


Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Defining and simulating benchmark test cases
  • Analyzing simulated results
  • Developing automated test tools
  • Researching previous studies in industrial as well as academic field
  • Documentation of work processes and tools, analyzed results and etc.
  • Working closely with PowerFLOW R&D teams

  • You will contribute to the core technology development of PowerFLOW in a dynamic and collaborative commercial software work environment.

Your Key Success Factors

  • Knowledge of the computational fluid dynamics and partial differential equations
  • Knowledge of complex fluid physics, particular in multiphase flow, is a plus
  • Knowledge of programming languages, i.e.Python and/or C++


The candidate will adopt and extend a set of generical, academic and industrial benchmark cases for regular phase filed solver validations; provide careful and complete analysis to confirm expected changes related to registry update, derive cutdown studies to assist developer debugging, identify issues and areas for further improvements. The  set of validation cases are expected to provide sufficient coverage of solver application regimes (e.g grid resolution, grid alignment/inclination, VR, Reynolds number, viscosity ratio, density ratio …) and thoroughly exam the accuracy, robustness and performance of each phase field solver release. 



  • Currently enrolled in a master’s or PhD (preferred) degree program for the duration of the internship
  • Major in relevant Science and Engineering fields (including but not limited to Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical Engineering, Physics) with demonstrated prior experience in CFD code development & validations and ideally multiphase flow modeling
  • Knowledge of the computational fluid dynamics and partial differential equations
  • Knowledge of complex fluid physics, particular in multiphase flow, is a plus
  • Knowledge of programming languages, i.e. Python and/or C++
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0
  • Excellent organizational and collaborative skills
  • Solid English written/verbal communication
  • Demonstrates independent thinking and problem solving skills
  • Work onsite at 185 Wyman street Waltham MA for the duration of the internship

Expected to conduct independent, high-quality CFD verification and validations on multiphase flows; present detailed analysis and work closely with developers to plan/execute step by step investigations to identify the quality issue of the solver and provide timely feedback. 

The desired candidate is expected to have knowledge of programming languages, i.e. Python and/or C++, knowledge of the computational fluid dynamics and partial differential equations and knowledge of complex fluid physics, particular in multiphase flow.
