Team Introduction and Overview

The intern will work in the general area of developing data-driven machine learning algorithms. Focus will be placed on neural networks algorithms trained from data collected from physics-based traditional methods such as finite elements or finite volumes. The intern will collaborate on several research initiatives geared towards creating 3D Surrogate models for industrial applications that learn from physics-based results from real industrial geometries/applications. 

Role Description and Responsibilities

The intern will assess the predictiveness and computational effectiveness of the machine learning methods as compared to traditional physics based simulations. Work includes but is not limited to applications in durability, safety, life science, and manufacturing.  The intern will work with machine learning developers to assess and improve the accuracy and efficiency of developed methods for realistic applications.

  • Prepare data, train, validates, test against available data by running machine learning trainings and inferences.
  • Code using Python (or C++) for Machine Learning prototypes for 3D Surrogates. 
  • Documents the work performed via PowerPoint presentations and produces one final report that could result in publication (conference/journal).
  • Participate in team meetings.


  • Actively enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program at a college or university for the duration of the internship.
  • Knowledge of different deep learning/neural network algorithms and FEA modeling and analysis methodologies/technologies.
  • Coding experience in Python or C++. Coding experience using Pytorch, Tensorflow or JAX is a plus.
  • Experience with geometric deep learning algorithms is an additional plus.
  • Takes direction and guidance from others, adopts and develops best practices and navigates around obstacles creatively.
  • Highly motivated, able to shift directions quickly when priorities change.
  • Exhibits strong organizational skills and detail orientation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Fluency in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong mathematical skills and a strong continuum mechanics foundation.
  • Ability to work independently and/or within a collaborative team structure.

The internship, offering a hybrid work schedule, will commence in March 2024 or later and may last for a period of up to six months
