Grapheal
IF WE make affordable self-powered biosensors that connect to smartphones, can we detect and monitor chronic diseases?

Challenge
The recent health crisis has underlined the importance for both caregivers and patients to get access to simple and rapid solutions based on diagnostic tests and monitoring of pathologies in the field. Current monitoring suffers from poor ergonomics, lack of interoperability and high costs.
Disruptive Innovation
Grapheal has developed an innovative electronic wound patch that integrates a bio-stimulant material based on graphene. The transparent, ultra-thin patch non-invasively collects biomedical data from wounds via embedded biosensors and monitors wound evolution, providing early alerts in case of infection. Using NFC technology, the patch transmits data directly to a dedicated cloud platform through a standard smartphone, eliminating the need for specialized readers.
This approach reduces costs, enhances interoperability, and enables deployment in remote or resource-limited areas without compromising data security. Drawing on secure smart card technologies, Grapheal ensures robust encryption and optional biometric protection. The system delivers personalized, data-driven wound management, offering chronic wound caregivers a safer, more efficient e-health solution.

Impact
Grapheal’s patch enables continuous remote wound monitoring and provides early alerts for infection, which is especially critical for chronic wounds. These wounds, often found on the legs of elderly patients or the feet of diabetic individuals, can take months or even years to heal. In 20% of cases, they never fully heal, potentially leading to limb amputation. Globally, over half a million people are affected each year, and this number is rising by 6% annually due to the growing diabetes epidemic. Chronic wounds also create a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems, which can be significantly alleviated by combining Grapheal’s smart sensors with digital health solutions.
Leveraging the 3DEXPERIENCE platform
Grapheal leverages the 3DEXPERIENCE platform (BIOVIA) to simulate interactions between biomarkers and the surface-coated sensor, enabling optimized sensor performance. For product design, SolidWorks is used to develop wearables, microfluidics, and test strip casings. Outscale provides secure cloud storage for the collected data, while Medidata supports medical data acquisition, storage, and analysis, ensuring reliable and efficient handling of sensitive health information.
Collaborative & Collective Intelligence
Grapheal’s multisensing platform redefines health data acquisition. Traditionally, health data were stored in isolated repositories with access limited to a select few, creating silos that hindered the potential of data-driven insights. Grapheal overcomes these limitations by enabling biosensor data to be collected openly and securely via smartphones, while remaining fully GDPR compliant. This approach facilitates collaborative analysis and collective intelligence, making prognosis and personalized care more accessible and effective.
