Siemens Selects Product Lifecycle Management Solutions from IBM and Dassault Systèmes

Company’s mobile phone division uses PLM solutions to shorten design cycles and improve process automation

Munich, Germany and Paris, France – Oct. 13, 2004 - IBM and Dassault Systèmes today announced that Siemens ICM, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of GSM mobile and cordless phones, has selected their Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Solutions as its mechanical design platform for production of its cordless and mobile phone products.

Siemens will implement CATIA V5, for collaborative product design, and SMARTEAM, for collaborative product data management. These IBM PLM Solutions, developed by Dassault Systèmes, will enable Siemens ICM to capture, share and reuse design information across its mechanical development and manufacturing environment, which includes operations in Germany, Denmark and China. CATIA V5 and SMARTEAM will also help Siemens maintain a competitive advantage with superior technological know-how and product development tools.

“We undertook extensive efforts to compare and validate different mechanical design solutions,” Hermann Thonhauser, vice president for mechanical design and development IT, Siemens Mobile Phones. “IBM PLM Solutions developed by Dassault Systèmes were clearly the winner. With CATIA V5, we have an application portfolio that is very powerful and gives us the most flexibility in terms of design possibilities and data reuse from one model to the next. The SMARTEAM product data management solution responds to our need to store, retrieve and share mechanical product data among our worldwide teams.”

“Electronics manufacturers around the world are leveraging IBM PLM technologies to turn innovative ideas into business success,” said Raoul van Engelshoven, vice president, IBM PLM, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. “Our solutions allow electronics manufacturers to develop products in line with consumer trends, reduce turnaround time and create customer loyalty with quality products that are priced right. Accelerated time-to-market, innovation, additional revenue streams, and cost savings – this is what IBM PLM is all about.”

“CATIA and SMARTEAM enable electronics developers such as Siemens to capture their valuable engineering and manufacturing rules as corporate knowledge and optimize their end-to-end business processes,” said Denis Senpéré, vice president PLM Europe, Dassault Systèmes. “Knowledge reuse and sharing means Siemens can leverage its existing designs and significantly reduce product development cycles and costs.”

MDTVISION, a wholly owned services subsidiary of IBM, is managing solution implementation, training and support services at Siemens ICM. “The Siemens name is synonymous with high quality and innovation – and this is what we aim to deliver,” said Urban Mayer, CEO of MDTVISION in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “This new contract, based on solid and long-term cooperation between global leaders, will impact the innovative product development processes at Siemens and surely lead to more breakthroughs in mobile communication for people on the go.”
