NewspaperARCHIVE Moves from Autonomy; Considers Open Source Solr before Choosing Exalead

Exalead, a global leader of information access solutions and search-based applications for the enterprise and on the web, today announced NewspaperARCHIVE.com has moved its search functions to Exalead.

NewspaperARCHIVE.com is the largest historical newspaper database online. It contains tens of millions of newspaper pages from 1753 to present. Every newspaper in the archive is fully searchable by keyword and date, making it easy for people to quickly explore historical content.

NewspaperARCHIVE.com had bumped up against limitations of having nearly 100 million records. After the switch to Exalead in December 2009, NewspaperARCHIVE.com has been able to scale again, increasing the number of records by 20%; while at same time reducing the amount of hardware by 75%.

"We needed to find a solution besides Autonomy – we had hit a brick wall with their solution. We looked at open source solutions but found we couldn’t deploy them as efficiently or quickly," said Derek Fiscus, director of technology at NewspaperARCHIVE.com. "Exalead has helped NewspaperARCHIVE.com increase our scalability, reduce our costs and ultimately, improve our revenue."

"Some large web sites continue to rely on weak built-in search utilities such as those packaged with CMS systems, ineffective open source tools, or inexpensive third party solutions that don’t go beyond a frustrating laundry list of links. To build a differentiated search-based application such as NewspaperARCHIVE requires search technology that is both web-scale-capable and enterprise ready," said Paul Doscher, CEO of Exalead. "We’re confident that Exalead will help NewspaperARCHIVE continue its growth as the world's largest online newspaper archive."
