JUN-AIR chooses CATIA V5 for Silent Compressors

JUN-AIR reduces product development time by more than 50 percent thanks to CATIA V5


Nørresundby, Denmark, September 7, 2001 -  Danish compressor manufacturer JUN-AIR, IBM and Dassault Systemes (Nasdaq: DASTY; Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), today announced JUN-AIR’s selection of  CATIA to replace JUN-AIR’s existing CAD system.  JUN-AIR will use CATIA V5 to create complex and geometrical designs for silent compressors and vacuum pumps. JUN-AIR is among the world’s leading producers of silent compressors. <br/>



JUN-AIR product developers were hampered by the limited capabilities of their existing mid-range CAD system which proved insufficient for handling complex tasks.  “Calculating drafts and fillets is extremely demanding, especially when we design molded plastic parts. Our old CAD system could not handle some of our projects and, even when we designed some of our less complicated products, the update time was often 20 minutes. Our tight schedule could simply not bear it,” said Michael Mortensen, JUN-AIR’s Development Manager and the driving force behind the decision to choose CATIAV5. <br/>



JUN-AIR considered several solutions and finally chose CATIA Version 5, partly because it can handle complex designs. JUN-AIR started out with five licenses for their Danish development department and later bought one more license for their department in the United States. Now JUN-AIR will be able to carry out detailed design and finite element analysis for all its mechanical products. <br/>



After just a few months of implementation and getting to know the new system and its work methods, Mortensen states that CATIA V5 fully meets their expectations. “CATIA is incredibly fast and can handle JUN-AIR’s most complex designs without any problems. Our total development time has been reduced by more than 50 percent and this is because we no longer have to start from scratch in the case of major changes in the design. Now we can just continue working on the same data throughout the entire development phase” he said. <br/>



JUN-AIR has benefited from a CATIA functionality that they overlooked during the selection process. The function is called multi-body and it makes it possible to divide a complex part into smaller units called bodies, which can then be manipulated individually. This function makes CATIA Version 5 stand out from traditional feature-based CAD systems and it makes the design of complex objects much faster and easier. <br/>



Mortensen added that JUN-AIR will concentrate its efforts now on refining its methodologies so the company can maximize its CATIA V5 benefits. <br/>



Idé-Pro Skive, an IBM Business Partner, has been responsible for the delivery of  CATIA Version 5 and the training of JUN-AIR’s design engineers. The company also uses CATIA V5 to develop prototypes and this has proved to be a huge benefit as it eases the transfer of the design files and ensures a faster product release. <br/>
