Georgia Tech and Dassault Systemes to Develop Next-Generation 3D PLM Tools and Train Future Users

Development partnership will create an international PLM competency center on US east coast

Atlanta, Georgia, USA and Paris, France – July 17, 2002. The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and Dassault Systemes today announced the formation of a strategic development partnership for 3D Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) technology. Under the agreement, the two parties will develop multi-disciplinary projects and research activities in the areas of internet-based collaborative product engineering, product simulation, e-commerce, and 3D PLM education.
At the core of the new partnership is the creation of the Georgia Tech Product Life Cycle Management Competency Center (GT-PLMCC) on the main university campus in Atlanta. The Center intends to provide Georgia Tech with the new computer-aided classrooms, intelligent synthesis environments, and virtual reality simulation theatres necessary for collaborative design evolution and education. The high performance computer labs will be unique in their location in an academic setting, allowing Georgia Tech students to design better product systems, and systems of systems. One of the functions of the GT-PLMCC will be to disseminate new design and analysis methodologies, visualization technologies, and best practices to government and industry partners through sponsored research and seminars in coordination with Dassault Systemes. The Center is a pioneering effort to produce an international standard 3D PLM technology demonstration site on the U.S. East Coast, at Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech will initially use the PLM tools to produce cutting edge aeronautical/aerospace engineering technology coupled with an established integrated product and process development (IPPD) methodology in support of advanced vehicle design research. Additional development will take place in the areas of manufacturing, management, and enterprise resource planning (ERP).
The partnership is the latest advancement in a long association between Georgia Tech and Dassault Systemes. The university has been teaching and using Dassault Systemes software for twenty years dating back to CADAM and CATIA V1. Today, the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech boasts more than 300 seats of CATIA, the world’s foremost 3D virtual product design software. The software is currently used to support collaboration in engineering design and analysis through academic supervision of both undergraduate and graduate projects. Georgia Tech continues to be a leading producer of engineers with formal training in 3D Parametric CAD software.
The 3D PLM solution provided to the Georgia Tech Competency Center will include Dassault Systemes’ product portfolio of CATIA, DELMIA, ENOVIA, SMARTEAM, and the Component Application Architecture (CAA). The scope of the agreement initially applies to the Georgia Tech College of Engineering, but will soon be expanded to include other Tech colleges such as Architecture, Computing, and Management. “Georgia Tech’s reputation as an international center for innovative engineering education will be strengthened by the partnership with Dassault Systemes. Georgia Tech students will be exposed to the entire suite of state-of- the-art PLM solutions to aid in their research and design activities. I expect that this partnership will significantly improve the ability of government and industry to collaborate with Georgia Tech in conducting the cutting edge research that will fuel the economies of the future.” said Peter Hart, an Aerospace Design Research Engineer, and Managing Coordinator of the Georgia Tech Product Life Cycle Management Competency Center (GT-PLMCC).
