DD 21 Alliance Announces Development Agreement with Dassault Systemes
Washington, D.C., January 29, 2001 - The DD 21 Alliance has announced a development acceleration agreement with Dassault Systemes (NASDAQ:DASTY, Bourse de Paris) on CATIA Version 5 and ENOVIA to support the complete Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) of the U.S. Navy’s Zumwalt-class Land Attack Destroyer (DD 21). Under the agreement, Dassault Systemes will develop dedicated shipbuilding software solutions as requested by the Alliance.
The DD 21 Alliance, Bath Iron Works and Litton’s Ingalls Shipbuilding, was formed to accomplish the DD 21 five-phase program for radical breakthrough capabilities. By aggressively applying advanced technologies, DD 21 exemplifies the transformation of the military industrial complex as the first class of the U.S. Navy’s Surface Combatants for the 21st Century. DD 21 must incorporate revolutionary ship survivability/signature levels, modern combat capabilities and automated systems to increase effectiveness while reducing crew size and lowering overall ship life-cycle cost.
The CATIA / ENOVIA platform was selected to meet the DD 21 stringent design, budget, schedule and collaboration requirements. With its inherent advanced technologies in object modeling, constraint management, and knowledge-based engineering, CATIA/ENOVIA is ideally suited for dedicated shipbuilding application tools as required by DD 21. The agreement funds Dassault Systemes to accelerate the development of these tools on top of existing CATIA/ENOVIA features to gain differentiating functionality. The tools being built on CATIA Version 5 features products such as Structural Hull, Smart Diagrams, Piping, HVAC, and Electrical.
A distinguished feature of the new tools includes the Space Engineering Assistant, which uses advanced server communication protocol technology to continually monitor the database giving DD 21 designers instant notification of possible ship object clashes. Another new function provides penetration management by automating piping work orders through ENOVIA for collaboration between the pipe design team and structural engineers. With these specialized tools, the CATIA / ENOVIA Solutions provide the digital enterprise infrastructure necessary for complete ship lifecycle management.
Philippe Forestier, CEO, Dassault Systemes of America, stated, “Shipbuilding is a strategic industry segment for Dassault Systemes. We are delighted that the DD 21 Alliance has chosen CATIA/ENOVIA technology to be the next generation software platform to support the DD 21 program. This agreement will allow Dassault Systemes to focus additional energy to accelerate shipbuilding application development on V5.”
