Description

We are providing this Technical Note to inform you about the release of BIOVIA Notebook 2021 Golden that includes the following fixed issues:

Enhancements

This release of BIOVIA Notebook includes the following enhancements.

CELN-11437– The Desktop Connector Legacy mode is no longer supported for BIOVIA Notebook. The Upgrader automatically changes the settings. Please refer to the Notebook Installation Guide for instructions on configuring the Desktop Connector Messaging Service.

CELN-11361– The Section Properties menu item is now also visible for system sections, such as Author and Title.

CELN-11269, CELN-7965– The creation of Oracle tablespace when installing Notebook has been simplified to use the same location as the SYSTEM tablespace by default.

CELN-11268– All error messages from the Structure Repair Tool are sent to the application's log file, instead of to the Notebook API log.

CELN-11249– Various HTTP headers have been removed for security reasons.

CELN-11248– The session cookie flags for ElnAdminWeb have been modified for security reasons. The cookieSameSite attribute is used if it is defined in the ASPNET_Schema and .NET 4.7.2 or later is installed on the server.

CELN-11246– For security reasons, the API systeminfo endpoint now shows less information for non-administrator users. A new API endpoint, notebookinstanceid, has been created that returns the Notebook instance ID and is available to all users.

CELN-11245– The token parameter in URLs used when redirecting from the login service to Notebook has been replaced with a temporary short-lived token. The actual session cookie is subsequently acquired from the Notebook API. This change has been made for security reasons.

CELN-11228– You can now use dictation to enter text in the Body Text section. Some basic commands are available, including insertion of a space, period, comma, or new line. To use the function, a user must be given the ElnVoiceControl privilege by an administrator.

CELN-11218, CELN-7717– The Experiment Collector that allows export of Notebook experiments to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform now runs in an interactive mode. An import session must be invoked by entering the username/password into the application. The session is then active until it expires, at which point a new session must be started.

CELN-11201– In Data Archive, support for the user ID as an integer value has been improved to allow different lengths as a configuration parameter.

CELN-11150– Automated installation using Ansible is now supported as part of the standard Notebook package.

CELN-11081– A message is now shown if a chemical structure cannot be opened because the drawing tool is missing on the client computer.

CELN-11048– Desktop Connector messages are now cleaned up more thoroughly to avoid unnecessary growth of the DC_MESSAGES database table.

CELN-10954– In a Foundation Hub environment, basic authentication and bearer token (OAuth2) authentication now work with all Notebook API and Data Archive API endpoints.

CELN-10914– The Task Planner section can retrieve information about Materials and Samples from Foundation Hub, including CISPro Hazard and Safety data with pictograms, codes, and descriptions.

CELN-10879– The BIOVIA Notebook Administration Guide now includes information on the permitted characters for users' passwords.

CELN-10729– When an experiment hit list is exported to Excel, the native Excel workbook format (.xlsx) is now used instead of CSV. This improves formatting and avoids problems with encoding of local language characters. The export uses a new feature of the Notebook API, that allows sets of records to be converted to a table and returned as an Excel worksheet or an HTML table.

CELN-10666– Submitting an experiment on behalf of the author can now be done through the API. Note that no digital signing is performed.

CELN-10640– The web service ElnLoginService has been removed. ElnAdminWeb authenticates using NotebookLoginService instead. Please read the upgrade instructions regarding this.

Enhancements – Notebook Collection

This release of the Pipeline Pilot Collection for Notebook includes the following enhancements

ANC-246– It is now possible to create and delete groups using the Notebook Component Collection.

ANC-245– The Get Current User Info component now retrieves all the groups for which the current user has administrative privileges.

ANC-244– A component now exists to retrieve groups and users that are members of another group.

ANC-243– Project administration is now possible by means of the Notebook Component Collection.

ANC-242– You can now add and edit PowerPoint Presentation sections to Notebook experiments using the Notebook collection for Pipeline Pilot. You must update your protocols with the new version of these components to access the new section type.

Note: The Extract Sections from Experiment and Section Query component interfaces and behavior have changed. For new and existing protocols, these components now only retrieve sections of all types if you set the new What To Extract parameter to All Section Types.

ANC-233 – Users can add and edit user-defined references and site-specific lookup sections from Pipeline Pilot, using the Add/Edit Local Lookup Section and Add/Edit Site Specific Lookup Section components.

Fixed Defects

This release of BIOVIA Notebook includes the following fixed defects.

CELN-11381– The ElnDirectorySyncService no longer crashes when trying to deserialize the JSON response from the GET api/v1/applications endpoint of Foundation Hub.

CELN-11376– Corrections have been made to the calculation behavior in the Reaction section: - Manually entered values are preserved when recalculation is triggered by a change in the amount of limiting reactant. - Manually entered values are preserved in calculations using the Volume/Molarity and Volume/Density/Purity models when molecular weight has not been specified.

CELN-11242– File types can be blocked for upload to the File Attachment section. By default, the .pkg, .dll, .bat, .reg, .cmd, .exe, and .msi types are blocked.

CELN-10671, CELN-11362 – Templates can now be viewed in PDF format.

CELN-9908, CELN-9879– Setting a log level in the web.config file for the NotebookLoginService now works. Previously, all log messages were output, regardless of the level specified.

CELN-9575– Project names can now contain comma characters, and the Advanced Search finds such names.

CELN-9332– The Upgrade application now omits a time-consuming database test step when upgrading from a release after Notebook 2018. This makes upgrade of large systems significantly faster.

CELN-9173– The error handling of the Save as Word function has been improved.

CELN-9160– User validation when the author of an experiment changes has been improved.

CELN-9159– When a user attempts to change the author of an experiment, the list of users is populated much faster. Previously, the listing could take several minutes on a large system.

CELN-9064– The file name in an Image section is removed when the image is deleted.

CELN-9041– Items in a User Defined References list can now contain square brackets.

CELN-8790– In Advanced Search, the "paste structure" button is no longer disabled after the search structure is deleted.

CELN-8438– The API GET /experiments/{parentId}/submissions endpoint has been optimized for better user performance and less load on the database server.

CELN-8178– Unnecessary privileges in the Data Archive tablespace scripts have been removed.

CELN-8145– The global experiment cache has been refactored for improved performance. As part of this fix, the submission padlock symbol now updates after co-signing, which is a reinstatement of the (correct) behavior from versions before 2020 SP2.

CELN-6995– The Description field of lookup sections containing a large number of values can be searched, using partial matching without any wildcards or quotes.

CELN-6042– When a password is set for a user in ElnAdminWeb, and the password complexity requirements are not met, an error message is shown. Previously, on SQL Server systems, creation or update of users was silently aborted if the password was too weak.

CELN-11533– The Desktop Connector installer has been modified to prevent premature exit caused by Windows Defender.

CELN-11509– When PowerPoint is launched by the Notebook web client, or when a PowerPoint window opened by the Notebook web client is closed, other PowerPoint windows are no longer brought into focus.

CELN-11495– The LogDirectory settings for Data Archive have been removed from the Data Archive API web.config file. The settings are now read from the RIA web.config file.

CELN-11453– The content of the Task Planner section is now indexed for free text searching.

CELN-11451– The input behavior of the Molarity, Mass, and Volume fields in the Chemical Reaction section has been corrected. An error in the Volume/Molarity calculation model was introduced in Notebook 2020 SP2 that caused the Mass field to be blocked if a Molarity value was entered first.

CELN-11443– Detection, startup, and shutdown of Office applications have been modified to prevent the occurrence of unresponsive application processes.

CELN-11442– The Desktop Connector now detects browser versions when they are installed for the current user, as well as for all users, on a Windows system.

CELN-11404– The code for creating experiments has been optimized to improve performance.

CELN-11378– Section permissions are now correctly displayed for users and groups in ELNAdminWeb when permissions are inherited from several groups. Previously, in certain cases the permissions were incorrectly displayed, although the underlying database permissions were correct.

CELN-11311– Adding a reagent or solvent lacking a chemical structure shows the name rather than "No Structure". This fixes a regression in Notebook 2020 SP2.

CELN-11307– When the user clicks Connect this browser in a Chromium-based version of Edge, Notebook now correctly connects to Edge. Previously, it sent its cookie to Chrome.

CELN-11306– The database view API_WRITEABLESECTIONDATA is obsolete, and has been removed for performance reasons. Section add and delete operations are now faster.

CELN-11305, CELN-11309– Reactions can now be pasted into the Chemical Reaction section again. This fixes a regression in Notebook 2020 SP2.

CELN-11263– On some Windows 10 systems, ChemDraw 17 fails to place structure drawings on the clipboard. An alternative method has been implemented that allows import of chemical reactions into a Reaction section with preserved chemical drawings.

CELN-11262– If creation of an experiment by a user fails because the user is member of a group to which a blank experiment template is assigned, but that template is not readable by the user, a clear message is now shown.

CELN-11231– The Structure Repair Tool can be run by all administration accounts. Previously, only SUPERUSER could run it.

CELN-11230– Experiments created before Notebook version 2016 SP2 that contain an image in a body text section now save correctly as Word documents. Previously, all sections after the section containing the image were missing in the exported Word file.

CELN-11224– The recommended IIS settings to limit disclosure of the system details have been clarified in the Installation Guide.

CELN-11223– The jQuery library has been updated to version 3.5.1.

CELN-11158– To strengthen protection against cross-site scripting, only allowed HTML tags can be used in editable fields of the editor.

CELN-11124– The section saving mechanism has been refactored to avoid unnecessary complexity and avoid duplicate entries in the section history.

CELN-11106– The logic for executing queries from the Library page has been optimized to reduce system resource utilization.CELN-xxxx – the summary

CELN-11082– The ElnDirectorySync no longer reports an error when trying to remove a non-empty zone from Data Archive.

CELN-11009– In the Notebook Library pages, an experiment is represented by a clickable link in listings even if its title contains only blank space.

CELN-11008– An experiment title can be removed and left empty. The experiment is shown as "Untitled" in all listings.

CELN-10940– The Screen Capture feature in Image sections scales correctly when the display setting is more than 100%. Incorrect scaling was primarily a problem on Windows 10 systems.

CELN-10908– It is now possible to save an experiment with a single < character in the title.

CELN-10667, CELN-11040– Failing chemical property calculations no longer cause the application pool to stop on Windows Server 2016 systems.

CELN-10656– Sharing of an experiment on behalf of the author can now be done through the API.

CELN-10567– When content is replaced using Paste to replace in an Image section, both the displayed and the original image are replaced.

CELN-10513– When a public template is created, it is now immediately visible to all users that have the appropriate access permission.

CELN-10121– A size restriction for submission comments has been removed. Many or large comments could block opening of the submitted part.

CELN-10016– The list of preferred chemical drawing tools in the user profile now reflects the true application status for the system.

CELN-8991– If a password contains a potentially dangerous string which is blocked by IIS, a clearer message is shown in the Notebook user interface.

CELN-8828– The Data Archive Import menu no longer shows an "Undefined" entryCELN-xxxx – the summary

CELN-11450– Entering molarity with the unit M is correctly interpreted as mol/L in the Chemical Reaction section. Previously, it was interpreted as mmol/L.

CELN-11386– The dates in recent experiment listings are no longer shown in red. Overdue experiments are indicated with an alarm bell symbol as before.

CELN-11333– The behavior of the Close button in the submission Sign Next workflow has been modified. After the last experiment has been signed, the user is redirected to where the signing was initiated.

CELN-11315– The Sign Next feature of the counter-signing page now works in Internet Explorer 11.

CELN-11293– The Chemical Structure filter indicator is no longer shown erroneously when Advanced Search is used.

CELN-11250– In imported experiments containing a Reaction section, chemical structures are now properly indexed for similarity and substructure searching.

CELN-10903– Email alerts no longer provide links to the legacy Windows client.

CELN-10870, CELN-11214, CELN-11221, CELN-11251, CELN-11222– Use of an Oracle client is no longer required, and its functions have been replaced by an embedded .NET Managed Client.

CELN-10861– Experiment Type strings in 2-byte languages are correctly shown in library listings on SQL Server systems. Previously, they were displayed with question marks if the experiment was cloned.

CELN-10275– The message displayed when no packages are found in Data Archive has been corrected.
