T50-2023 BIOVIA Notebook can give ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR in Chromium 117 and later browsers

Background

When using the BIOVIA Notebook web client from Chrome, Edge or another Chromium-based browser built on version 117 or later of Chromium, some calls to the Notebook server may fail with the ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR appearing in the browser while working with the Notebook web client.

The errors have been observed while applying a filter to a list of users in the Users page under Administration. It is likely that also the lists of Projects, Lookups and Experiment types are susceptible to this problem when applying a filter.

The error can trigger a reload of the page after a short time. If the page reload happens while for example editing a user, the changes will not be saved.

This issue doesn’t affect data already saved in the Notebook database.

Workaround

It is possible to make a configuration change on the server to prevent this problem from occurring.

The responsible Notebook administrator should learn about the IIS setting ‘minBytesPerSecond’ and possible side effects of changing it prior to applying the change below.

How to apply the work-around

On the Notebook application server, start the IIS manager.
Select the web server at the top of the tree.
Go to Configuration editor.
Select Section webLimits under system.applicationHost.
Find the setting minBytesPerSecond and set the value to zero.
Click Apply to save the changes.
Restart the IIS.

Note: Once the Notebook is upgraded to 2024 release or later, the change above should be manually reverted.
