Description

Pipeline Pilot Server uses the BIOVIA Plugin and BIOVIA Desktop Connector to allow chemistry data to be entered into web applications from desktop chemistry editors. The Plugin and Connector allow users to double-click to launch a desktop chemical drawing tool and transfer a structure to/from that drawing tool. This is often preferable to cutting and pasting.

The security certificate used to encrypt the data during communication between these technologies and the desktop editors will expire on February 21st, 2020.

After that date, the BIOVIA Plugin or BIOVIA Desktop Connector installed will no longer be recognized as valid by the BIOVIA web applications, so launching by double-clicking will not be available.  The BIOVIA Plugin is part of Pipeline Pilot Server versions 2016, 2017 and 2018. The BIOVIA Desktop Connector is part of Pipeline Pilot Server 2019 and later.

Note that the Desktop Connector has two modes, “Legacy” and “Messaging Service”. Administrators choose which mode to use when installing the software. As described below, this certificate update is only needed if you have chosen to use Legacy mode.

Note: The 2020 Golden release already includes updated certificates so the certificate update is not required if you are using Pipeline Pilot 2020.

What action is required to fix the issue?

We will be releasing a separate hotfix for each affected Pipeline Pilot version back to version 2017 R2.  The release is currently scheduled for January 2020. All customers will be notified of availability via their subscription to RSS feeds accessible at 3ds.com/support/news.

You will need to install the appropriate hotfix on the Pipeline Pilot server machine. Please refer to the table below for the specific hotfix needed for the version of Pipeline Pilot that you are using. The hotfix will update the BIOVIA Plugin or BIOVIA Desktop Connector on the server with a security certificate valid until Sep. 4th, 2021. Once the Pipeline Pilot Server hotfix has been applied, users MUST  download an updated version of the BIOVIA Plugin or BIOVIA Desktop Connector including the valid certificate.
The version-specific hotfixes for the most recent versions will be available from the Dassault Systemes download platform accessible from our Support Web site. Version 2017 R2 HF8 will only be available from BIOVIA Support.

Specific instructions for users of version 2017 R2

As noted above, the hotfix for version 2017 R2 will not be available from the Dassault Systemes download platform. If you are using the BIOVIA Plugin with version 2017 R2, please submit a service request with BIOVA Support at https://www.3ds.com/support/. We will make 2017 R2 HF8 available to you directly.

When does the HF need to be installed?

The server hotfix appropriate to your Pipeline Pilot version needs to be installed before Feb. 21st, 2020 in order for users to maintain access to a working BIOVIA Plugin or Desktop Connector. The hotfix can be installed in advance of this date without users being impacted.

What do you need to communicate to your users once the server hotfix has been applied?

If you are using the BIOVIA Plugin, you can choose to proactively have users download the new plugin by directing them to the download link found on the Pipeline Pilot Server home page.

If users have not proactively installed the updated plugin by Feb. 21st they will see a prompt after this date informing them that their plug-in is not valid and that a new version is available.  Please ensure that your users click to download the new plugin at that point. This process also applies to users of the Desktop Connector after 2019 HF2 has been applied.

What will happen if no action is taken?

If you do not install the server hotfix by February 21st the affected applications which use the BIOVIA Plugin or Desktop Connector will start to prompt users to download a newer version. The prompt will include a link to download the plug-in from the Pipeline Pilot server, but this will still be the old version. There is an option to stop the prompt to download the plug-in, but the plug-in will not be usable until the hotfix with an updated certificate is installed. Chemical structures can still be transferred between desktop chemistry editors and the web applications by manually cutting and pasting.
