BIOVIA Discovery Studio and BIOVIA Materials Studio: Change of the vendor daemon port number in the FLEXlm license file from 1720 to 1740
Program
BIOVIA Discovery Studio and BIOVIA Materials Studio
Operating System
All supported operating systems
Background
Discovery Studio and Materials Studio are enabled by a FLEXlm license file that is generated for a specified license server. These license files can be identified with the keyword FLEX in their filename. In a FLEXlm license file the msi vendor daemon has been using TCP port 1720 for communication.
It has been reported that the 1720 port number may conflict with other software, such as Microsoft services or VPN clients. As a result, the license server may behave unpredictably, such as experiencing frequent automatic restarts of the license manager. Client machines may also give errors reading data when connecting to the license server or hang when checking out the license. The workaround in these situations was to edit the VENDOR line of the license file to change the port number from 1720 to 1740 and to re-install the license file on the license server.
Solution
In response to requests from our customers to avoid potential licensing issues arising from port conflicts in the future, the default vendor port number for new license files has been changed. Discovery Studio and Materials Studio FLEXlm license files generated from the 19th of November 2019 now set the VENDOR port number to 1740 by default.
The line in the license file now looks like this:
VENDOR msi PORT=1740
The 1715 port number, used by the license manager, is unchanged. Please ensure that the 1715 and 1740 ports are open in your firewall to allow communication between the license server and client machines. If you receive a new license file and you had previously opened the 1720 port number in your firewall, please open the 1740 port instead.
Please note that this information relates to license files issued since the 19th of November 2019. If you have an existing license file that is working there is no need to make any changes.
This resolves the previously reported issue LPK-75.
