T89-2024 Using the Vault Configuration Tool with Password Encryption

When a user clicks the "Apply" button in the Vault Configuration Tool, many Vault .config files are updated and the Vault Services are restarted.  In Workbook 2023 and 2024, however, it does not update the password encryption automatically in the web.config for the file service.

Operating System

All supported operating systems

Description

When a user clicks the "Apply" button in the Vault Configuration Tool, many Vault .config files are updated and the Vault Services are restarted.  In Workbook 2023 and 2024, however, it does not update the password encryption automatically in the web.config for the file service.  Without following the steps outlined below, end users will get the following error when opening an experiment:  A problem was encountered:  Unexpected status code response from server:InternalServerError. File sections will also display a large red X instead of content. This can happen any time changes are made using the Vault Configuration Tool which requires clicking the "Apply" button (update of passwords, update of certificate, update of database server info, etc.).

Resolution

The following steps should be followed to manually encrypt the connection information in the file service web.config which will eliminate the errors above:

  1. Stop the Vault Services on the Vault Server.
  2. Open a command prompt as Administrator.
  3. Change the directory to the Vault Utilities folder.

Eg.  cd C:\Program Files (x86)\BIOVIA\Vault\Utilities

  1. Run the following command substituting the correct path for the file service web.config. PasswordReplacer.exe -"avspath" –file "C:\Program Files (x86)\BIOVIA\Vault\FileService\web.config"
  2. Start the Vault Services.

Note:  These steps assume the passwords were previously encrypted in the Vault configuration files, which is the default when running the Vault Installer.
