Using SIMULIA's PowerFLOW CFD solution, Actiflow was able to help one of their recent clients in the wind turbine industry optimize their product and design new variants by developing a simulation model and optimization tool within days.

Challenge

One of Actiflow’s clients in the wind turbine industry designed and tested an innovation to reduce trailing edge noise of wind turbine blades. Now, this client requested to build and validate a computational model to optimize their product and to design new product variants.

Solution

Actiflow assessed the trailing edge noise levels of a standard wind turbine blade with and without the client’s innovation using SIMULIA's PowerFLOW CFD solution. Results were then successfully compared with wind tunnel measurements.

PowerFLOW helped us to develop a validated model for the simulation of trailing edge noise of a wind turbine blade, enabling us to optimize a new innovation for reducing these noise levels.

Aero-acoustics simulation can be challenging and time-consuming using Navier-Stokes CFD codes. Setting up and running these simulations typically takes a few weeks. Using PowerFLOW, Actiflow was able to develop a simulation model and optimization tool for its client within only a few days. Not only were they able to shorten the simulation time, but the results were highly reliable as validation showed a good match between simulations and wind tunnel measurements.
