T49-2017 Discovery Studio DelPhi to be replaced by CHARMm PBEQ Poisson-Boltzmann module

DS Simulations

Dear BIOVIA Customer,

BIOVIA is announcing the discontinuation of development of the Discovery Studio DelPhi electrostatics potential program.

Calculation of the electrostatic potential of proteins is a valuable metric in understanding a number of biophysical phenomena, such as solubility and viscosity.  To calculate electrostatic potential maps, Discovery Studio includes the Poisson-Boltzmann equation solver DelPhi, originally developed at Barry Honig’s lab in Columbia University.
In the upcoming release of Discovery Studio, DelPhi will be replaced by the PBEQ Poisson-Boltzmann module available in academic CHARMM source code. Results and output of PBEQ have been shown to be equivalent to DelPhi, and the output structures are natively compatible with Discovery Studio, without the need for any conversion.  PBEQ also includes some enhanced features such as novel grid shapes (e.g. rectangular gridboxes suitable for modeling long structures like DNA).
The 2017 R2 release (December 2016) is the last version of Discovery Studio DelPhi.  Per BIOVIA’s support lifecycle policies, we will continue to provide mainstream support for this program until December 2019 and legacy support will end in December 2020.  CHARMM PBEQ will be introduced in the next release of Discovery Studio, which is planned for December 2017.
