T24-2018: Time critical information regarding applications that use the BIOVIA Plugin (Notebook)

Notebook

Affected Products

This Technote applies to the following products:

  • BIOVIA Notebook

Description of the Issue

The BIOVIA plugin is a Windows application that enables communication between Notebook running in your browser and desktop resources (MS Word, MS Excel, BIOVIA Draw, etc.).  A communication with localhost is used, that requires a SSL certificate.

The security certificate used to encrypt the data during communication between the plugin and the desktop editors will expire on June 8th, 2018.

Unless the hotfix is applied before that date integration with Microsoft Office, chemical drawing tools and copy/paste functions will stop working on Chrome and Firefox. Internet Explorer is not affected.
Resolution:

What action is required to fix the issue?

We will be releasing a separate hotfix for each affected Notebook versions.  The release date is currently scheduled for 25 May 2018 and you will be notified of its availability on the BIOVIA Download Center as soon as it is released. Please refer to the table below for the specific hotfix needed for the version of Notebook that you are using.

Notebook

  • 2018 HF1 (available now from the DLC)
  • 2016 HF5
  • 2017 R2 HF3 (available now from the DLC)
  • 2017 HF2

For customers who use the web client on BIOVIA Notebook 6.0 SP4 we recommend upgrading to a later version or use Internet Explorer 11.

The hotfix will update the plugin on that server with a security certificate valid until Feb. 21st, 2020. Once the server hotfix has been applied, users will be prompted to download an updated version of the BIOVIA plugin including the valid certificate. You will need to advise your users on how and when to download the updated BIOVIA plugin.

When does the HF need to be installed?

The server hotfix appropriate to your Notebook version needs to be installed before Jun. 8th, 2018 in order for users to be able to continue having access to a working BIOVIA plugin. The hotfix can be installed in advance of this date without users being impacted.

If you have any questions, please contact BIOVIA Support.
