T20-2018: BIOVIA Workbook 2017 R2 and higher: Issue with Updating Microsoft Office Files in File Section

In BIOVIA Workbook 2017 R2 or later versions, the File section may have issues with Microsoft Office documents that are edited through Workbook. This issue is a highly intermittent occurrence where Office has not released the locks held on the document before Workbook tries to resave the document.

This issue may show the preview of the attached File correctly, but the actual document does not get resaved. The effect of this problem is that the version in the experiment is the previously saved version. The changes in the Office file will be lost.

We believe this errant behavior was introduced with Office 2016, but we have not been able to limit this problem to just that version.

Resolution:
This issue has been logged as a defect, with issue numbers NBK-29438 and NBK-29429, which have been addressed in Workbook 2017 R2 SP1 HF4 and Workbook 2018 SP1, respectively.
If you have not yet deployed the aforementioned versions of Workbook, then, you may use the workaround to save the file to disk and add it after it has been edited, or complete the editing of the Office document before attaching it to the File section of a document in Workbook.
