How to use Pipeline Pilot 2016 Chemistry Sketcher when BIOVIA Plugin is not installed

With Pipeline Pilot 2016 a new Chemistry Sketcher component was released as part of the Reporting Collection. This new component replaces the previous Java-based sketchers and addresses the fact that browsers soon will no longer support NPAPI plug-ins like Java applets.

In order for the new Sketcher to be clipboard enabled, a client side Windows application needs to be installed, the BIOVIA Plugin. The BIOVIA Plugin enables the sketcher to launch BIOVIA Draw or ChemDraw. It also enables the support of copy & paste of live chemical structures.

If you for some reason do not want to or cannot use the BIOVIA Plugin the Chemistry Sketcher can also be used without BIOVIA Plugin installed. For this the following steps are required:

Configure the browser to automatically open the preferred sketcher when downloading MOL files.
Open the structure in Draw or ChemDraw by double-click.
Transfer the structure back into the sketcher from BIOVIA Draw by 'Copy as Molfile' (Ctrl+M). In ChemDraw, use Edit > Copy As > MOL Text (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+O).
Click on the sketcher and Ctrl+V to paste..

A feature request was created to make the interaction between sketcher and drawing tool more intuitive.

This issue has been logged as Enhancement Request PCHE-6716 and will be considered for inclusion in a future release. If you consider this issue to be high priority (i.e. this is severely blocking your use of this BIOVIA product) please contact BIOVIA Support.
