Composites Primer for Abaqus Users

Take advantage of this live online course right from your desk. Each day of the class will begin with a lecture session. After the lecture, workshop sessions are conducted offline with technical support provided by hosting office via phone and email. Some hosting offices also allow for in-person attendance.


With increasing use of composites in structural design, improved and faster techniques to model their mechanical response are needed. This poses unique challenges both in terms of designing the structural geometry as well as the ensuing solution for the analysis. Abaqus Unified FEA provides several tools to efficaciously solve today’s analysis to model tomorrow’s structures. This course presents a series of lectures aimed at introducing various tools which are specifically designed towards the modeling of composites. The main topics that will be covered include:

  • Modeling of mixed composites - a methodology to create structures with a number of discrete layers
  • Pre- and post-processing of composite FEA analysis and their results respectively
  • Modeling damage and failure in composites
    • Damage and Failure for fiber-reinforced composites
    • Cohesive Behavior and VCCT techniques to model delamination
    • Barely visible impact damage (BVID)

Note that this online course is a customized subset of the training material offered in the full Analysis of Composite Materials with Abaqus course.

Who Should Attend

The course is designed for engineers and designers interested in analyzing composite structures with greater control and improved durability of workflow.

Some knowledge of the FEA solver Abaqus and the complete Abaqus environment (Abaqus/CAE) is suggested.

What is Included

Electronic copies of the training notes will be provided to each registrant for their personal use. Every registrant will also receive a copy of Abaqus Student Edition. Many of the topics covered in this course can be practiced using Abaqus Student Edition; however, to ensure that you can perform all the course workshops fully, you will need access to a licensed copy of Abaqus. No additional Abaqus licenses will be provided.
