ENOVIA VPM Designer Workspace

ENOVIA® VPM Designer Workspace allows designers to pursue complex design activities while controlling when changes are propagated between team members to avoid unnecessary interruptions.

It is sometimes necessary for designers to modify and iterate on their design data without impacting the current “master” definition of the design, and without being impacted by on-going modifications from other design teams. ENOVIA® VPM Designer Workspace addresses this need by enabling designers to work freely in an isolated virtual environment called a “designer workspace,” and only deliver changes to the master enterprise design definition when the work is complete.


ENOVIA VPM Designer Workspace mainly serves engineering teams working on complex assemblies which may need multiple design iterations before reaching the desired result and without affecting the progress of the rest of the organization. Designer workspace data is isolated from the reference data and therefore modifications can be made without impact. Conversely, modifications can be made on reference data without any impact to designer workspace data.


With ENOVIA VPM Designer Workspace, each designer decides when to take into account modifications performed by others and decides when to promote modifications. Full collaboration on a single product reference is maintained across the different designer teams in the company, as they proceed with their work.

  • Creating a Designer Workspace
    Designers need to be able to work in a place where they can modify and iterate on their data without impacting enterprise data and without being impacted by on-going enterprise data modifications. A designer workspace enables designers to work freely in an isolated virtual environment, and then deliver local changes to the enterprise data when the work is completed.
  • Managing Designer Workspace Content
    The Designer Workspace content is defined by a persistent filter to which it has been associated, and this filter can be modified at any time to change its content. Data that is configured in the enterprise reference is also configured in a Designer Workspace. The user can naturally modify or apply configuration criteria on Designer Workspace data. When versions are created in a Designer Workspace, the new versions are then seamlessly taken into account when synchronizing or delivering into the reference. Any user having access to the reference data can access it the same way in any Designer Workspace. The data in the Designer Workspace can be indexed in 3D and can be batch processed.
  • Preventing Data Modification Conflicts
    Designer workspace data cannot be modified until it has been explicitly locked by the designer in order to prevent concurrent edits of the same data. As soon as the data is locked, it is reserved in both the local Designer Workspace and in the reference.
  • Bi-directional Synchronization
    Synchronization enables a user to inherit changes made to the reference product since the Designer Workspace was created, or since the last synchronization. All or a subset of modified data can be synchronized depending on designer needs. Conversely, designers can deliver all or some of their local changes to the enterprise data as work is completed. Relational design is fully managed during synchronization. Links between synchronized objects and the others are rerouted automatically.
  • Designer Workspace Compass
    With the PLM Compass, users can modify the display of data in the Designer Workspace based on its status, and then take appropriate action. Data can be highlighted based on the following conditions: - Data created in the designer workspace or duplicated from the reference is locked by the current user. - Data created in the Designer Workspace or duplicated from the reference is not editable (read-only data). - Data is reused from the reference and not editable (read-only data).
  • Tailoring Designer Workspace Content
    It is possible through business logic to tailor the user experience in the Designer Workspace to meet company specific needs. The following is possible: - Administrators can create rules to define data that can be shared with the enterprise reference, but will not be modifiable. This prevents large volumes of duplicate data in the Designer Workspace. A typical use case would be to prevent standard parts or released parts from being copied in a Designer Workspace. - Creation, synchronization and delivery commands can be limited to specified users or roles to ensure proper security. - When delivering or synchronizing data, business rules can be used to modify the attribute values of the copied objects. - The Designer Workspace object type behaves similar to other VPM object types and it can have additional attributes assigned to it with ENOVIA® Studio Modeling Platform.
