Product Overview

DELMIA DPM Work Instructions provides ability to perform model based work instruction authoring. It gives the user to generate work instructions based on a loaded configuration, hence supporting the notion of plan once, use for all configurations.

User can instantiate work instructions from pre-created work instructions templates (defined in the MH database) and then automatically generate the completed work instructions based on 3D model. DELMIA DPM Work Instructions also provides an ability to document these work instructions on to an Excel file with images embedded in the Excel sheets for process in the Assembly

DELMIA Work Instructions enables users to leverage the investment in upstream authoring tools by reusing the process, product, and resource information and built-in knowledge and deliver it to the actual production activity on the shop floor. Work instruction authors can create work instruction libraries containing standardized text for work instructions (in Manufacturing Hub). Unlike other work instruction packages, DPM Work Instructions allows work instruction authors to interact with the process plan and the product model to enhance the work instructions with actual up-to-date engineering data.

Work instruction authors can leverage all previous engineering data to enhance the work instructions. As the author creates work instructions, they can select standardized instructions from user-defined libraries. The author-selected text from the work instruction template will appear in work instructions. For ex: If a Work Instruction template was created in Manufacturing Hub, whose text says Tighten the nut to [ ] ft-lb , then the work instruction that is instantiated will contain the same text as in the work instruction

Historically, a Work Instruction was managed as a simple Text Activity wherein user has to manually edit the contents of the Text to actually define what the work that needs to be done. DELMIA Work Instructions rovides a way to define set of work instruction libraries that may be stored in the PPR Manufacturing Hub. While authoring work instructions for the shop floor, the manufacturing engineer may use pre-defined Unresolved Instructions in the library to create instruction activities.

Once those activities have been defined, the software provides automatic generation of text dependent on the specific configuration the user is working on. During the process of resolving the unresolved text in the Work Instruction activities, the software will look into the Engineering data in the model, thanks to a VB script that runs in the background, and then based on the Design information will resolve the work instructions to give the shop floor mechanic the exact work instruction that needs to be carried out in the shop floor for the given configuration that has been loaded.

Work instruction authors may also require data input from the shop floor user. If it is required, as in some aerospace applications of work instructions, they may specify a data collection form, such as to record a torque value applied when tightening a bolt. The author may add buyoffs and change-notification activities in the work instructions to ensure shop floor compliance with requirements.

DPM Work Instruction also provides user a way to document the work instructions that are authored in a Process document onto an Excel file. Once user has authored all the work instructions with Text, and other choreographic activities like Viewpoint, Visibility activities, etc, then user can generate Excel file documentation of the different work instructions.

Upon generating the excel file, separate tab sheets will be generated in this Excel file for each of the operations in the Assembly process and then the work instructions text, along with the snap shot images of the product build up will be embedded in the excel file

Note that this capability exists only for process documents loaded from flat file system and does not apply for process documents coming from Manufacturing Hub

Product Highlights

DELMIA DPM Work Instructions:

  • Adds resolution to existing process plans
DPM Work Instructions adds actual job detail. It gives user the capability to enrich a given job by adding more specific information like Work Instruction Text that describes the actual work that needs to be done. In addition user can also define some choreographic activities like Viewpoint, Visibility, Annotation activity.

  • Creates textual work instructions
Creates textual work instructions from standard work instruction text libraries and built-in knowledge from upstream authoring tools (CAD, Simulation, etc). The textual work instructions can be either created by instantiating a text and manually typing in the text information to it, or user can define it using a pre-defined work instruction template

  • Generates automatic generative work instructions
Historically, a Work Instruction was managed as a simple Text Activity that the user had to manually edit the contents of the text to actually define what the work was that needed to be done. DELMIA Work Instructions provides a defined set of work instruction libraries that may be stored in the PPR Manufacturing Hub. While authoring work instructions for the shop floor, the manufacturing engineer may use pre-defined Unresolved Instructions in the library to create instruction activities. Once those activities have been defined, the software provides automatic generation of text dependent on the specific configuration the user is working on. The software executes a VB script in the background that has the intelligence to resolve the work instruction based on the Engineering data in the model. For example: If the unresolved text calls for resolving the Diameter of a hole, then the VB script can be written so that it fetches the right diameter size from Engineering data.

  • Reduces erroneous work instructions, ambiguity, incorrect drawings
Reduces erroneous work instructions, ambiguity, incorrect drawings by creating work instructions from standard work instruction libraries and built-in knowledge from upstream authoring tools.
Reduces engineering change orders and/or non-conformances on the shop floor due to erroneous work instructions, ambiguity, and wrong drawings since the work instructions are based directly on the engineering and manufacturing data residing in the single, integrated PPR database managed with a consistent configuration and effectivity.

  • Provides confirmation of conformance to requirements
Provides proof of shop floor conformance to requirements and adherence to precedence of operations by allowing the author to add buyoff and change notification activities in the work instructions to ensure and provide documentation of shop floor compliance with requirements. Authors can locate and store corporate standard buyoff and change notification activities and libraries in the native file system, or in the Manufacturing Hub.

  • Adds data collection activities from standard XML libraries
Data collection/ tags trigger the MES system's interface to activate or open a form for data collection purposes.

  • Integrated with the Manufacturing Hub
Shop floor instructions for mechanics are derived directly from the single PPR database, and thus represent an authority Build-To Package. Work Instruction, Buy off, and Change Notification activity libraries can be stored on native file systems or in the Manufacturing Hub.

  • Generate Excel documentation of Work Instructions
User can generate Excel documentation of the work instruction activities that has been created. The excel documentation contains the actual text as well as the images of the product build up as a given product is being assembled in a given operation

Product Key Customer Benefits

  • Adds resolution to existing process plans
Work Instruction authors can create work instructions directly in the process tree, thus ensuring that as the process changes, the work instructions can be updated as required.

  • Customizes standard text
Users can create libraries of standard text instructions that may be customized by the work instruction author to accurately reflect the current process. This allows a consistent presentation of work instructions to the shop floor user.

  • Provides Generative work instruction capability
Plan once, use everywhere. Once work instructions are created and stored in the library. Automatic generative work instructions update the instructions with consideration to geometry changes.

  • Reduces erroneous work instructions, ambiguity, incorrect drawings
As the work instructions are created directly in the process tree, all changes to the process and product will be reflected directly in the work instructions. Work instruction authors can leverage all previous engineering data into the work instructions and can include automatically generated images from the actual simulation of the process in the work instructions where necessary.

  • Adds data collection activities from standard XML libraries
Work Instruction authors can include data collection forms to be filled out by the shop floor user of the work instructions. This allows tracking of the actual work done, ensures adherence to specifications, and confirmation that the instructions were followed correctly.

  • Provides confirmation of conformance to requirements
Provides ability to enable conformance to requirements by external MES by allowing to author buyoff and change notification activities in the work instructions. Authors can locate and store corporate standard buyoff and change notification activities and libraries in the native file system, or in the Manufacturing Hub.

  • Integrated with the PPR Hub
DELMIA Work Instructions leverages existing engineering data from DELMIA Process Engineer to the MES vendor.
