Formula Design and Analysis
CAD and most recently 3D parametric design tools have provided productivity gains to product designers in the discreet, part-centric related industries. In the process based industries, there are differing product development resources that must work together to develop a new product including chemists/formulators, process engineers, technologists, microbiologists, analytical chemists, packaging engineers, toxicologists, and regulatory affairs. The key difference is that these product developers share is that they are working with formulas and recipes as opposed to mechanical part components.
One of the more important needs for enabling a formulator is easing the manipulation of the formulation itself, such as changing ingredients, levels, processing or other production details. Many companies today are utilizing various differing tools working with spreadsheets and other documents, but the limitations of these tools lead to errors and result in wrong percentages and incorrect materials in formulations. Also, the visibility outside of R&D is severely limited when product design is not shared with the other cross functional groups. This results in non-approved materials being used in product formulations and late stage product re-works that cause product launch delays and significant cost overruns when product formulation must be done multiple times. DS’ Formula Design and Analysis solution was developed for CPG organizations with the above challenges in mind.
Being able to quickly retrieve product information significantly helps with productivity. Searching for a raw material by functionality, common name, description, trade name or meta data description allows the formulator to find the information they need to make decisions quickly and with the confidence that they are looking at change controlled product information. Whether they are looking for specifications, approval status, cost, regulatory data, document attachments or even where-used (formulas include a particular raw material), a centralized product information repository brought by DS PLM solution, with the ability to store both structured data and unstructured documents, puts all R&D information at your finger tips.
Formula Design and Analysis solution includes:
- Formula definition
- Raw material definitions
- Ingredient definition
- Regulatory restrictions
- Material specifications
- Product costing
- Bill of Materials (BOM) management
