Abaqus 6.13 allows import of actual part names when importing a STEP file in Abaqus/CAE; it had been a long standing demand from customers. Though a step forward, it still lacks in capturing the hierarchical structure of assembly, sub-assemblies and their associated parts as existing in the CAD package. When STEP file is imported in Abaqus/CAE, it does a "flat" import of the parts in STEP file, and arranges them in alpha-numeric order in Abaqus/CAE Part module. This becomes a problem when the assembly consists of many sub-assemblies and hundreds of parts.

Sub-Assembly Identification Tool creates a hierarchical structure of sub-assemblies and associated parts in Abaqus/CAE from a STEP file. The default STEP file import in Abaqus/CAE is 'flat' which creates only parts without any information of sub-assembly. The tool identifies sub-assemblies and associates related parts to it.

Jiandong Yu, Technical Specialist

Jiandong Yu is a technical specialist in the DS Center for Simulation Excellence in Fremont, CA. Before joining the SIMULIA Team, Jiandong worked for Toyota Technical Center, where he did in depth research on glass fiber reinforced composites. Jiandong has a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stony Brook University, he also holds a Masters Degree in Hydrodynamics and Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering.

Shashwat holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, India and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University, USA
