SIMULIA R&D Senior User Experience Designer- Hybrid or Remote

United States, MI, Dearborn Regular 5/12/2022 526916

Imagine New Horizons….

As a SIMULIA Senior User Experience Designer, you will be responsible for designing simulation solutions to help our users succeed in completing complex, collaborative engineering workflows. To do this, you will work with other UX designers & researchers, development leads, product managers, and subject matter experts across the organization to:

  • build a common understanding of the current experience and the problems that users experience in trying to complete their workflows;
  • work with product managers to create vision designs and define the right solutions to solve users’ problems and meet their needs;
  • design information architecture, user interactions, and user interfaces to help guide implementation of the solutions to ensure good usability;
  • define user-centered metrics and definitions of done; and
  • Improve UX knowledge, skills, and practices throughout the organization.

We would consider remote candidates within US and open to other Dassault office locations such as – Waltham MA, Johnston RI, San Diego CA; Woodland Hills, Paso Robles CA

What will your role be?

 Engineers and designers use our simulation software in complex, collaborative engineering workflows that typically span weeks or months. They solve engineering problems, explore design alternatives to improve their products, and imagine innovative solutions in a wide variety of industries including aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, clean energy, and healthcare. To do this, they employ a mix of desktop and web applications developed by many 3DS teams across multiple brands. Our R&D teams are technology-driven, which our highly skilled users appreciate: our UX challenge is to reduce the friction and gaps in our users’ end-to-end workflows. Your goal will be to help us get a shared understanding of the current experience and improve our ability to define and deliver great workflow-based UX.

You’ll spend about half your time collaborating with product managers, developers, and subject matter experts within the SIMULIA brand to discuss long- and short-term goals, proposed designs, research, plans for the next few releases, feedback on what has been implemented, etc. When things are working well, we are equal partners with the development lead and the product manager and we have deep technical discussions to negotiate the best UX possible (given code infrastructure and schedule constraints). There is a lot of iteration and typically a lot of ambiguity and complexity, so it is hard mental work to figure out the right design (which is both challenging and satisfying). Even as we return to the office, most of our meetings will still involve zoom because the colleagues we collaborate with are all over the world.

The rest of your time is spent doing individual work. Mockups are usually low fidelity, used to communicate a user workflow, high-level concepts, or alternative solutions. Other typical activities include building spreadsheets of problems to solve/user outcomes, information architecture diagrams, Status/Target/Proposal presentations, blog posts to share (or seek) information on our intranet, and research questions & plans. We meet as a team twice a week for design critiques (we’re trying to get better at this), and every other week for team meetings. We also work with our UX colleagues in other brands to share information and collaborate on projects. These are interesting because we get to learn about areas of the business that are quite diverse, including biomedical solutions, manufacturing operations, and CAD.

You’ll learn about a wide variety of interesting engineering challenges involving realistic simulation of structural, fluid, electromagnetic, acoustic, and motion behavior as well as optimization and design exploration techniques that help our users explore and understand their products virtually so they can improve the real world. You will work with a highly educated and talented team to improve the power and usability of our 3DEXPERIENCE applications.

Your Challenges ahead

  • Collaborate with select product teams on UX research & design of complex, highly technical engineering applications.
  • Help define a UX strategy to improve the organization’s UX maturity.
