Role Description & Responsibilities

Our Dassault Systemes SIMULIA PowerFLOW Physics Validation team is excited to announce we have a Full time, internship opportunity available in our Waltham, MA office!

The PowerFLOW Physics Validation team at SIMULIA is part of the SIMULIA Fluids R&D organization, a world-class group of researchers in the fields of lattice Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes methods, turbulence modeling, scientific computing, and software engineering. We verify and validate existing physics models as well as early prototypes of new models in SIMULIA's flagship CFD solver, PowerFLOW, to expand its capabilities as well as improve its accuracy, robustness, and performance for applications in ground transportation, aerospace, oil & gas, infrastructure, manufacturing, and life sciences & healthcare industries.

Your role involves responsibilities in the following areas:

  • Come up to speed quickly and perform validation studies that compare turbulent flow simulation results obtained using PowerFLOW to experimental tests/measurements and other numerical/analytical results with a particular focus on external aerodynamics and heat transfer
  • Evaluate existing physics models as well as early prototypes of new models by setting up flow simulation cases, running those cases on both CPUs and GPUs, collecting and analyzing results, benchmarking the results against known quantities, carrying out technical research, writing up analysis, and presenting the results
  • Play a key role in new product development, interacting closely with the physics and software development teams to transition product prototypes through all stages of development into product releas
  • Evaluate existing physics models as well as early prototypes of new models by setting up flow simulation cases, running those cases on both CPUs and GPUs, collecting and analyzing results, benchmarking the results against known quantities, carrying out technical research, writing up analysis, and presenting the results
  • Analyze and diagnose issues related to physics models, software implementation, and usage for a wide range of physical cases involving academic and industrial flows and report on the results
  • Engage in continuous process improvement activities such as upgrading & automation of end-to-end validation workflows, labeling flow field data and training ML models to assist in physics validation, bringing legacy scripts to compliance with recent version of client software, etc.

You will be part of a team that plays a crucial role in ensuring deployment readiness of workflow and usability.  We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team with skills in the following areas:

  • Problem-Solving Skills: be provided with the necessary industry standard systems and specialized software tools to perform the verification and validation tasks effectively
  • Communication Skills: collaborate with field teams to induct new industrial cases and/or set up new cases yourself to expand the collection of test cases to validate new features/capabilities
  • Creativity: Ability to think creatively and explore innovative approaches to enhance currently available or devise novel capabilities for streamlining simulation workflows
  • Self-Motivation and Learning Agility: Be mentored by experienced team members and introduced to various validation processes and test cases, and their relevance for testing various physical models

Qualifications

  • Education in engineering: Currently enrolled in a graduate program (MS/PhD) in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics or allied fields

  • People skills: Ability to interact and collaborate effectively with a diverse team of people from different cultures, and a good balance of diplomacy and straightforwardness to effectively solve time-sensitive problems

  • Communication skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential

  • Time management skills: Alacrity to fail fast and succeed faster while working independently in a fast-paced R&D environment

  • Physics domain knowledge: Expert knowledge of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, CFD, numerical methods, turbulence modeling & simulations, and scientific computing

  • Programming/scripting skills: Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environment, and practical experience with coding in Python and Shell Scripting is a must.  Experience with verification and validation of CFD solutions will be a huge plus

In addition to working with your direct team, as a member of Dassault Systemes NAM Intern Program you will be invited to our Speaker Series, Lunch and Learns, Networking Events and employee functions.

Besides the above, a sense of adventure and a willingness to have fun through work are great tools at our disposal.  If you enjoy learning new things while working with a friendly group of highly skilled individuals, this could be a great fit for you!

This is an onsite role at our Dassault Systèmes Waltham, MA location; no remote or offsite permitted

Compensation for the role will be commensurate with experience. The total expected compensation range will be between $33– $40 per hour.
