3D optimization & preparation for multiple purposes

A 3D model can be used in different situations with different levels of definition and details. For multiple usages, like industrial design, engineering, simulation, or marketing, the preparation and optimization of 3D data is critical. In some cases, there is no need to keep the invisible data, you just want to see the exterior aspect of your product and visualize it in a 3D environment. Removing all of the invisible data significantly reduces the size of the model and the computation time of some applications.

The main goal of CATIA Distiller is, from an existing 3D model in the V6 database, to create new ones optimized for specific usages, like real-time visualization, Virtual Reality experiences, simulation or rendering. It allows you to optimize your 3D models through data tessellation, re-organization and simplification. The “distilled” models are uploaded back in the V6 database, and can be exported to other applications as 3DXML files or published on the online community.

    While exploring your 3D in the silver layer of 3D Live, you can access CATIA Distiller from anywhere with a simple right click. The level of expansion of the model within the turntables set the complexity of the product structure which will be created automatically at the opening in the Distiller workbench. CATIA Distiller opens a duplicated version of the original model which is never impacted. The duplicated model contains no more exact geometry, only triangles, but all graphic properties and textures are preserved.
  • Get the tessellation information about your 3D model
    Once opened with CATIA Distiller, you can review your model at the level of visualization of the CATIA authoring environment, including ambient occlusion. From there, it is possible to display statistics that contain all the information about the number of triangles of the geometry. You have access to the overall model information and to the one relative to a sub section of it. Directly select the 3D or click on the product structure to display the number of triangles of a sub selection. This way, you can evaluate how much a sub part of your design has an influence of the global number of triangles of the whole geometry. Of course it is still possible to visualize your geometry through the triangles visualization mode, to quickly see where the dense areas of triangles are located.
  • Reorganize your data
    The level of expansion of the model upon opening sets the complexity of the product structure created automatically in the Distiller application. You have the possibility to re organize the product structure of your model in order to adapt it to future usage, or to simplify it, by using the “Split Rep” function. This also enables you to anticipate future tessellation operations.
  • Simplify your data via hidden geometry removal
    This function allows you to smartly and automatically remove the invisible or unnecessary geometry of the 3D model, without having to work on the product structure. Hidden Surface Removal is a technique that removes the visible triangles from a list of viewpoints, without degrading the visible geometry. Removing all of the invisible data significantly reduces the number of polygones of the model.
  • Optimize the data tessellation
    With the tessellation feature, you can set the percentage of polygones you want to keep, and compare the resulting quality thanks to a preview feedback. It is possible to tessellate the whole model or only part of it, just by selecting the 3D. You can tessellate different zones of the geometry at different levels of simplification. An appropriate product structure re organization prior to the tessellation optimization may help if various levels of decimation are needed. The triangulation of a selection is simplified according to the maximal percentage of triangles to keep. A high simplification is not always possible in order to ensure an acceptable quality.
  • Export optimized models to other applications as 3DXML files
    The optimized model will then be uploaded back in the V6 database, and can be exported to other applications as a 3DXml file or directly published on the online community.
