Jenbacher Chooses CATIA V5 for Cleaner Engines

40 seats purchased : development time to decrease by 35%

Jenbach, Austria and Paris, France, August 2, 2001. Jenbacher AG, IBM and Dassault Systemes (Nasdaq: DASTY; Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA) today announced Jenbacher’s purchase of 40 CATIA V5 seats, with 25 more to be acquired over the next 3 years. One of the world’s leading suppliers of gas engines for power generation, Jenbacher is Austria’s oldest CATIA customer.
Engineers at Jenbacher use CATIA’s unique simulation and analysis tools to experiment with various fuels and engine designs to exploit nontraditional sources of energy, such as landfill or sewage methane and other farmed biogas. CATIA V5 mechanical design and analysis software helps Jenbacher develop better methods of generating electricity and heat/refrigeration simultaneously while reducing energy loss to a minimum.
Bernd Fahmüller, IT Department Leader, Jenbacher AG, explains, “We are a major manufacturer of remote cogeneration plants that supply both electricity and heat at decentralized locations around the world. As such, Jenbacher must be able to design gas cogeneration systems that offer the highest efficiency of energy conversion with a minimum environmental burden. With CATIA V5, our engineers can develop innovative engine designs which conform to the strictest international standards, and in less time, while avoiding the errors which are typically made by our competitors. Before the migration to V5, a breakthrough in engine efficiency took almost twice as much time. Now we will be able to bring new technology to market in less than a year because each of our conception and develoment teams can work simultaneously on-line to decrease time to market. ”

“Jenbacher has achieved remarkable success with CATIA, including the development of engines that boast over 90% efficiency. This translates into a 42% savings compared to a typical condenser plant which does not exploit the heat produced during electrical generation. CATIA analysis technology is vital to our innovations in the context of increased environmental awareness and the need to transform available energy sources economically.”

Jenbacher relies on IBM platforms for all of its business tasks, from the IBM eServer iSeries central system to eServer pSeries individual workstations to CATIA V5 product development tools. Plans are in the works to implement ENOVIAVPM which will enable Jenbacher’s engineering department to link to other Jenbacher departments and to its supply chain, for more efficient management.
Klaus Schaefer, Global PLM Digital Enterprise Sales Manager, IBM said, “Jenbacher’s decision to use CATIA V5 after performing extensive comparative testing illustrates CATIA’s dominance in Product Lifecycle Management solutions. Along with Dassault Systemes and our business partners, including EDV Büro Müller GmbH for Jenbacher, IBM PLM will continue to provide the most comprehensive and sophisticated CAD engineering applications and support on the market. Our aim is to help our customers stay ahead of the competition through greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”
“ENOVIAVPM is fully integrated with CATIA, and this gives businesses the capability to manage highly complex processes with ease, efficiency and speed,” said Etienne Droit, executive vice president Sales and Marketing of Dassault Systemes.
