François Gabart's 60 foot monohull MACIF

Dassault Systèmes extends its congratulations to François Gabart and is proud to have participated in this first victory of the Vendée Globe in 78 days 2 hours and 16 minutes.

An exceptional boat designed and simulated with Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform

In their 2010 Passion for Innovation partnership, Dassault Systèmes and Michel Desjoyeaux rose to a challenge that had never yet been achieved: to create a 60-foot monohull in less than 6 months using the Dassault Systèmes 3D solutions. It is this same boat, now Banque Populaire, that has enabled Armel Le Cléac'h to claim second place on the podium.

These 3D digital models were used to design the 60-foot MACIF monohull sailed by François Gabart for the departure of the 2012 Vendée Globe on November 10, 2012. By winning the competition at his very first attempt, the skipper has made a big splash on the legendary ocean racing scene.

François Gabart

Having started out on the Figaro Bénéteau II circuit, François Gabart is a fully trained engineer and has been a professional skipper since 2008. He has been sailing for the MACIF group since 2010 and using the 60-foot MACIF since 2011.

At just 29 years old, he is the youngest ever winner of the Vendée Globe with 78 days, 2 hours and 16 minutes. He improved the record set in 2009 by Michel Desjoyeaux (84 days 3 hours and 9 minutes).

He also smashed the 24 hour distance record by clocking up 534.49 miles at an average speed of 22.27 knots (official timing from the WSSRC*) and leading the race around two of the capes (Leeuwin and Horn).

Michel Desjoyeaux and François Gabart

In December of 2010, Michel Desjoyeaux and François Gabart participated in the Barcelona World Race (a non-stop, round-the-world race for crews of two).

Michel Desjoyeaux, has become the godfather of the 60' MACIF.

We drew on the lessons learned with Foncia/Banque Populaire to make further improvements in the boat’s potential in terms of speed and reliability. Having the 3D digital model and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform was obviously an enormous advantage, since we were starting from a model that was already born, from which we could take and improve each element by testing each modification virtually.
