Malaysia, traditionally a country that supplied commodities such as palm oil and rubber to the world is quickly transitioning to become an exporter of sophisticated high-technology products. And the economic and industrial reforms currently on-going in the country are intended to boost that growth to enable it to meet its goal of becoming a high-income, developed nation by 2020.

Naguib Mohd Nor, Chief Operating Officer of Strand Aerospace Malaysia (SAM) told the audience at the  3DEXPERIENCE Partner FORUM how SAM was selected in 2010 to become a local Malaysian champion—leading a large engineering services industry.

We do not make parts or components, but we can make designs for any aircraft

Specialists in aircraft primary composite and metallic structures design, SAM provides services to the aerospace industry worldwide serving tier-one aerospace companies. Today, SAM is involved in the design and certification of all Airbus flagship aircraft.

In addition to the aerospace industry, SAM provides engineering services to the energy, nuclear, civil engineering, rail and space industries, while also actively involved in a smart city development project.

With a current staff of 70 engineers, Mr. Mohd Nor says he expects his company to grow five-fold in the next couple of years. But with accelerated growth come accelerated challenges. To meet these challenges and maintain their lead on the competition, SAM is investing heavily in developing local engineering talent in order to continue delivering the high-quality standards the industry expects.

Already deeply involved in co-developing training programs with Malaysian ministries and government agencies with the support of Feiran Technology—a Dassault Systèmes’ Partner in Malaysia—SAM is accelerating human capital development and expertise on all Dassault Systèmes’ applications both for their own company and more broadly for Malaysia.

According to Mr. Mohd Nor’s estimations, between Strand Aerospace Malaysia and Strand UK, they harbor more than three hundred years worth of engineering knowledge on paper and in the brains of their people. Building that information into an ENOVIA repository and making it accessible on demand via an EXALEAD graphic user interface—tuned to the needs of the apprentice engineers—is the solution. This will create greater efficiency by significantly reducing the amount of time apprentice engineers need to spend with senior engineers getting answers to their questions. The other immediate benefit of ENOVIA according to Mr. Mohd Nor is in actually monitoring the productivity of the engineers on the ground—which again is important because of the shortage of senior mentors.

So for Strand Aerospace Malaysia, the Feiran Technology and Dassault Systèmes partnership is very important and they are banking on it to take their company and country to the next level.
