Assembly Feasibility Studies through 3D Simulation

DELMIA Assembly Process Simulation (APS) enables users to leverage the power of the Version 6 3D environment to perform product assembly feasibility studies. The powerful and intuitive capabilities of APS is used to discover potential assembly issues and communicate these discoveries directly to product designers or other stakeholders—and do it early, when changes are easier and less expensive.

APS provides a virtual 3D environment that includes shop floor resources and layout. Planners can create, optimize, and validate the assembly process in the context of its manufacturing setting.

    APS users can view and share the product in its assembled state in the Version 6 3D immersive environment with other project stakeholders. Using simple, intuitive commands, they can create interference-free product disassembly trajectories and discover potential design-for-assembly issues earlier. Assembly trajectory creation capabilities are provided to cover different levels of assembly simulation and validation including: Product Assembly, Manufactured Parts and Detailed Process Planning Validation.
  • Reverse trajectories.
    APS enhances the analysis value and rapid validation of assemblies by re-using and reversing predefined trajectories. With a single click of the mouse, users can quickly convert an assembly move to a disassembly move—or vice versa.
  • Easily modify trajectory paths.
    APS provides simple, intuitive tools that let users edit a part’s trajectory. For example, they can add, remove, or re-order points along the part’s trajectory path.
  • See the product buildup, operation by operation, in resources context.
    Users can leverage the work of upstream planners who have defined the manufacturing assemblies and the associated sequence of operations. To see the product buildup in the context of the selected operation and 3D layout of assigned resources, users just select the desired operation from a Gantt chart, a tree or an operation thumbnail. They will get a clear picture of the state of the assembled product in the current context of the resources without the distraction of other product parts. Using this interface, assembly tracks can be defined sequentially, quickly navigating operations in their relative order.
  • Identify operations by selecting manufacturing assemblies in 3D.
    Manufacturing assemblies can be easily identified and then used to navigate to the corresponding operations on which the assembly path should be managed.
  • Define probe points for analysis during simulation.
    Planners can define probes for checking part interferences by measuring between parts, or by sectioning parts, and applying these probes to steps in the manufacturing simulation.
  • Define assembly simulation scenarios.
    APS lets users define and store assembly scenarios. They can then select trajectories and analysis probes for the simulation. Multiple scenarios can be defined and saved, which helps users to perform feasibility studies and evaluate the impact of product and assembly process changes.
  • Detect interference during simulation.
    APS provides interference detection during simulation of the assembly process, making it easy to identify where further analysis is needed. Users can easily modify trajectories or the order of operations to avoid interferences where possible. They can also communicate seamlessly with product designers when the interference is the result of design-for-assembly issues.
  • Create choreographed simulations.
    Users can define simulations of specific activities such as changing part colors, turning on and off the visibility of parts, displaying text, and modifying the camera position between trajectory moves. This helps APS users to define process animations suitable for collaborative reviews and presentations.
  • Manage assembly sequences with a Gantt editor.
    The APS user interface allows the use of a Gantt chart to manage, track, and choreograph parallel and sequential activities.
  • Create excitation referencing operations in manufacturing simulation scenarios.
    For simulation analysis, users can reference a system or operation in an assembly sequence or in a manufacturing scenario. They can then use the operation assembly track to reference it in a simulation excitation. Simulation analysis of a manufacturing scenario can be used to validate the operation sequence.
  • Check interference at simulation replay.
    Users can analyze all interferences detected at each step of a manufacturing scenario simulation. There are dedicated 3D analysis tools to evaluate any selected interference. The display of interference curves are used to analyze the interference through color, section, and measure tools.
  • Generate the results of a manufacturing scenario in a simulation context.
    APS lets users play the results of a manufacturing scenario in a simulation or validation context without re-computing the simulation.
  • Generate animations of assembly simulations.
    Users can generate animations of the simulation with the APS Compile Animation command. This lets others throughout the extended enterprise easily review and collaborate without requiring access to or knowledge of APS.
  • Perform swept volume analysis during simulation replay.
    Users can generate swept volumes of part trajectories during animation replay. Swept volumes are useful when analyzing the space constraints needed to manipulate a part into its assembled position—and to communicate these requirements to part designers and other stakeholders.
  • Automatically generate an exploded assembly state.
    An exploded view of the product assembly can be generated with one click of the mouse. This is useful for a quick view of the product components before planning the assembly process.
